Show Fullerton Captures Invitational Tourney Honors; Broncos Place 2nd The Fullerton junior college Hornets from California proved to be the class of the fourth an-rual an-rual Bronco Invntational Tournament Tourna-ment at College of Southern Utah last week and walked off with the tournament championship and the first place trophy contributed con-tributed by Neal and Ollie's Market Mar-ket and Eill's Grocery. The CSU Broncos, tournament tourna-ment hosts, played brilliantly but couldn't quite cope with the powerful pow-erful California aggregation, particularly par-ticularly the amazing shooting accuracy of the visitors, and dropped the championship battle by a score of 76 to 65. The Broncos Bron-cos finished in second place and received a trophy contributed by Sam Gentry, local milk dealer. Fullerton took the measure of the Broncos In the opening round, 68 to 51, in one of the very best played games of the three-day meet. The two teams proved to be the class of the meet and came together again the championship cham-pionship game, only to have the Hornets defeat the Broncos for the third consecutive game. One ol these was In the Chaffey tournament tour-nament in California, which the Hornets went on to win, and then the two contests here. The CSU squad battled the visitors on practically even terms throughout the two games, hold ing the lead at least a portion of the time, but the final victories' vic-tories' came as the result of the amazing shooting ability of the Hornets, particularly Dave Hall and Dan Rogers. In the final analysis there was certainly no discredit to Coach Petty's team to lose to such a smootn working work-ing aggregation and Coach Alex Amalev from Fullerton, entered in the annual holiday meet. The Westminster Parsons, after af-ter dropping their opening game to San Bernardino, went on to win third place, taking the measure mea-sure of Dixie, 75 to 71 in the second sec-ond round, and trimming Ricks 63 to T6 in the last round. San Bernardino, after winning from Wesminster, dropped its game to C S U in the second round, 65 to 5S, and tripped Dixie in the final round. 91 to 62, to take fourth place, Ricks finished in fifth place behind San Bernardino, and Dixie, the only team unable to win at least one game, finished sixth and last. The Dixie Rebels, however, played great ball during dur-ing the meet, losing their first two games by very narrow margins, mar-gins, before collapsing before the San Bernardino team in the final game. Three old records were broken brok-en at the meet, the individual scoring record for one game, the team record for one game, and the two team recoid for one game. Danny Miles, flashy Dixie Rebel player, rang up 30 points against Westminster, to surpass the old record of 27 points held joinuy ny r.rnie nan oi veniura, Christensen of Ricks, and Teddy Smith of College of Southern Utah. In the game that Miles broke the record, Ray Buehler of Westminster tied the record, the fourth consecutive year that a player has scored 27 points in one game. Wilford Hopkins of Ricks scored 26 points in his first game to tie with Max Bond who scored 26 in 1950. San bernardino in scoring 94 points against Dixie broke the record of team scoring in one game, passing the 87 point record rec-ord against Ricks in 1952. The 63 points scored by Dixie in the record setting game, boosted the record for both teams one game to 157 points, one better than the record set last year by C S U and Ricks. Dan Rogers of Fullerton was high scorer for the three game series with 58 points, the fourth highest scored by a player since the tournament was started. Max Bond of C S U scored 72 points in 1950 for the highest total in the tournament. Ernie Hall had 71 points In the same year, and Christensen of.
