Show Daniel E. Matheson Succumbs After Long Illness I . - , i w Daniel E. Matheson, 79, prominent prom-inent civic and church worker of Iron County, died Tuesday following fol-lowing a lengthy Illness. For many years he was active in various var-ious development projects, working work-ing on many buildings, including includ-ing the first building of the D.onu Nnrm q 1 Clfhnn, now Cd - lege of Southern Utah; was active ac-tive In establishing telephone service in this part of the state, and was associated with the publication pub-lication of the Iron County Reo. ord for some time. Mr. Matheson was bom in Parowan Par-owan on May 14, 1873, a son of Alex and Lydia Evans Matheson, southern Utah pioneers who emigrated emi-grated from Scotland and Wales. For a time he lived in Vernal and Salt Lake City, but moved to Cedar City in 1895, where his father was engaged in the operation oper-ation of a flour mill. For some time he was in partnership with Charles S. Wilkinson as publishers publish-ers of the Iron County Record. He served as Police Court Judge in Cedar City for some time, and was deputy marshal in Cedar City for a considerable time. Closely associated with the establishment es-tablishment of telephone service in this area, he installed many of the first telephones in the county. He also assisted his wife in the operation of the telegraph office of the old Deseret Line, which she managed until it was taken over by the Bell Telephone Company. During the past three years he and Mrs. Matheson have spent most of their time in St. George working In the St. George L D S temple until poor health forced his retirement in October of this year. On April 27, 1897, he married Alice Maude Lunt, in the St. George temple. He is survived by his widow and seven sons and daughters: Mrs. Seth (Ianthie) Harper, and Mrs. William (Mary) Dalton, Og-den; Og-den; Mrs. Erwin (Violate) Stevens, Stev-ens, Layton, Utah; Mrs. Gordon (Phyllis) Gilbert, Encino, Calif.; Dwayne and Albert Matheson, Cedar City, and Wm. L. Matheson, Mathe-son, Parowan. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Owen Matheson, Enoch, and William Matheson, Duncan, Ariz. Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted by Bishop James Hey-wood, Hey-wood, in the First-Fifth Ward chapel at 2 p. m. Saturday, Jan. 2. Friends may call at the Southern South-ern Utah Mortuary from 4 to 8 p. m. Friday evening and from 10 a. m. until time for the services ser-vices Saturday afternoon. |
