Show Bob Jones Wins First Place In Local Contest Thirteen finalists in the Voice of Democracy contest, sponsored by the Cedar City Junior Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce and the Radio Broadcasters of America, competed compet-ed in final judging Tuesday evening eve-ning with Hob Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Jones of Ced;r City, taking top honors. Bob, besides receiving a 17 jewel Wittnauer watch, will have the recording sent to the Utah State Junior Chamber ofi Commerce for state competition! early in December. Young Jones, a senior, has been ' an outstanding debater in the school for the past two years, ' winning district honors last year ! and receiving the coveted Dm-1 ham Morris debate award at the' school last year. Second place honors were awarded Carol Sprague, and she will receive a Samsonsite luggage lug-gage piece. Third place went to Bernett Baldwin, and she will receive re-ceive a Shaeffer pen and pencil' set. All of the students are mem-1 bors of the speech class at the Cedar City high school. Prizes were awarded by Mullett Jewelry, Jewel-ry, Hunter Hardware and Appliance Appli-ance and the Cedar City Jaycees. Judges for the event were Ron-ald Ron-ald Morgan, R. D. Smith and Robert Ro-bert Heyborne. Each contestant was secretly given a number unknown un-known to the judges and they balloted by numbers not knowing know-ing the winner until the final decision was made. Originality and the method of presentation were the two determining deter-mining factors in the final selection, selec-tion, it was pointed out. All contestants con-testants spoke on the subject "I Speak for Democracy." Last year John Muir of Cedar City won the local and state contests con-tests and participated in an excursion ex-cursion to the East as a result of his participation in the national na-tional program. .This year Walter Lowe, chairman, chair-man, and McRay Cloward have acted as a committee from the Javcees responsible for the contest. con-test.
