Show Cedar Redmen, Parowan Rams Bow To Visiting Teams - But Not Low Cyprus Ilih School of Magna j and Springville High School has-j ketball te.iins of central Utah invaded Parowan and Cedar City last Friday and Saturday evenings, eve-nings, respectively, to cash in two wins each over the Rams and Redmen. However, the wins were not by large margins and the two southern south-ern rivals proved themselves tough foes for the supposedly champion caliber teams of Cyprus Cy-prus and Springville. At Parowan Friday evening in the opening game of the Iron County intersect ional tourney Cedar Ce-dar City forced Cyprus into an overtime period before bowing to the northerners, 3S to 36. Par-'.wan Par-'.wan on the other hand battled Alma Garrett's Red Devils right down to the line, losing in the final minutes of play by a 53 to 49 score. In the final period Parowan Paro-wan lost three of their top men on fouls, h. Benson, Tom Do-brusky Do-brusky and Eric Clark. At that point the Springville five jumped into a lead and held it until the final gun was sounded. Saturday evening at the College Col-lege of Southern Utah fieldhouse the twe northern teams turned on a little more steam and both Cyprus and Springville scored j more convincing victories than' the previous night. I Parowan opened the contest j against Cyprus and fought the j visitors to a 19 to 19 halftimej tie. Cyprus, led by Rydalch who dunked five field goals and four for four from the foul line for 14 points, spurted into a third ruarter 39 to 33 lead and con-i con-i nued their drive for a final victory vic-tory of 51 to 40 over the Rams. Cedar City dropped behind shortly after the opening whistle': had sounded and was never able' ;o threaten the Devils from that! pcint on. Springville won the'' contest 45 to 30. In the first quarter of play Springville took a dominating i 15 to 5 lead. Cedar City scored cnly one field goal in the first! quarter and that six minutes and 42 seconds after the opening whistle. The second quarter, however, the Redmen came out of their daze anil ramp within three points of the Devils, 22 to 19 at halftime. In the third quarter, the spark faded and the Redmen trailed 12 points, 23 to 35 at the third quarter rest, and 15 points, 30 to 45 as the final gun sounded. Jerry Frame, consistent scorer foi the Redmen, racked up 11 points against Cyprus and six against Springville to lead the Cedar team over the two game series. David Orton, Parowan, scored 20 points against Springville Spring-ville the first night for individual individ-ual honors for one game in the four game series. A last and scrappy team of Redmen proved it could compete with the best in the Class B division di-vision of the state in the game rgainst Cyprus Friday evening. Fighting hard all the way every member of the team had the will to win and the fourth quarter c'rive to force the game into an extra period showed that the Red-men Red-men won't give up easily. Saturday evening every man on the bench had an opportunity to play and teams in the Dixie division of Region Six may have trouble with the green Redmen before the league season ends. |
