Show Tom Brockmeier Nabs Bad Check Passer As the result of alert and courageous cour-ageous action on the part of Tom Brockmeier, pharmacist at Thornton Thorn-ton Drug Company, a New Mexico Mex-ico man is in the Cedar City jail awaiting trial in the district court or. a forgery charge. The man, Odie Jones, 33, of Las Cruces, N. M., attempted to pay for a purchase with a check on the Tibbetts Motor Company of Parowan, and when Mr. Brockmeier Brock-meier questioned the validity of Ifim r-hrre .TnnpQ left in a hurrv. However, Brockmeier followed and held him until officers could arrive on the scene. According to police reports Jones had apparently stolen some blank checks that were being printed at the Parowan Times shop. Five of the checks had been filled in each for $128.96, and Jones apparently planned to pass the checks in Cedar City. He had succeeded in paying for a purchase pur-chase at Mullett Jewelry store with one of the checks, getting 1 considerable change in return. He then went to the drug store, but Mr. Brockmeier called the motor company to determine whether or i not the check had been issued I by the firm. He was told that no such check had been issued so started to call for the police. At this point Jones left hurriedly. hur-riedly. Brockmeier, however, had Gordcn Christensen, store manager, man-ager, complete the police call, and proceeded to follow the bad check passer. He overtook Jones on the sidewalk in front of the store, and when the man refused to stop on request. Brockmeier proceeded to dump him into the gutter and literally sit on him until the police arrived. On his way out of the store Jones tore up the other checks he had and made out and threw them away. However, they have been recovered recov-ered and pieced together. Jones has been given a preliminary pre-liminary hearing and has been ordered to report for trial in the district court. He is being held in the Cedar City jail under $2500 bail to await trial. |
