Show "Sands oflwo Jima" To Be Shown In Cedar City Soon Much interest is being taken in the film "Sands of Iwo Jima" which will be shown at the Parks theatre in Cedar City beginning Sunday, Feb. 26 and running through Wednesday, Mar. 1. Many serviceman from southern south-ern Utah took part in the Iwo Jima campaign, around which the moving picture revolves. Here in Cedar City. Irwin W. Snow, 292 South 300 West, a corporal in the United State Marine Mar-ine Corps during the war, was awarded the Navy Cross for out-standing out-standing heroism during this ac-tion. ac-tion. He was cited while attached to a Marine Amphibian Tractor Battalion on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on Feb. 19, 1945. Corporal Cor-poral Snow's actions during this campaign, according to the citation, cita-tion, "had a vital effect on the entire operation and facilitated the capture of Mt. Suribachl. Cor-poral Cor-poral Snow's display of outstanding outstand-ing courage and devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." Another local man to see action ac-tion in this campaign, Arthur Fales, was a pfc in the Marine Corps at the time. Earl D. Hyatt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alma Hyatt of Parowan lost his life in the battle for the now famous volcanic island. "Sands of Iwo Jima", starring John Wayne has been termed by many critics as the most thrilling thrill-ing picture in years. |
