Show Union Pacific President Declares Company Will Not Take Action Against Merchants A. E. Stoddard, president of the Union Pacific Railroad company, In a letter this week to Gordon Christensen, president of the Ce-dar Ce-dar City Chamber of. Commerce, stated that no action will be taken against merchants in Cedar Ce-dar City who endorsed railroad checks totaling $9,400 issued to fictitious persons and cashed by Gottfried VV. Stingel, Union Pacific Pa-cific extra gang foreman. The letter was a reply to a protest signed by various merchants mer-chants and citizens of Cedar City against any actions being taken by the Union Pacific to recover from the endorsers. Irregularities in the handling of pay checks at Cedar City came to light last October when it was discovered that Stingl was receiving re-ceiving and cashing pay checks drawn in the names of two fictitious ficti-tious persons. Stingl pleaded guilty to the check charge before a federal judge in Salt Lake City and was put on probation for three years. Mr. Stoddard, in his letter, stat-ed stat-ed that, "We have now reached an agreement with the bonding company whereby the railroad company will absorb substantially substantial-ly all the loss involved in this case and the bonding company waives all of its rights of subrogation sub-rogation except against Mr. Stingl. Stin-gl. This puts the matter in such shape that the railroad company only has recourse against the endorsers en-dorsers of the checks, other than Mr. Stingl, and I am happy to say that, in the spirit of cooperation cooper-ation and so as not to disturb the friendly relations between the Union Pacific and the citizens of Cedar City, we do not intend to exercise our rights to such recourse." |
