World security is of grave concern to the churches, homes and schooU of today. The Sunday observance of this great week provides opportunities oppor-tunities lor discussion and action. American Education Week It sponsored Jointly by the National Education Association, the Amerl can Legion, the United States office of-fice of Education, and the National Nation-al Congress of Parents and Teachers. Teach-ers. The general theme of the week this year Is "The Schools are Yours" with the dally topics as follows: Sunday, Nov. 9 "Securing the Peace". Monday, Nov. 10 "Meeting tin Emergency In Education'.' Tuesday, Nov. 11 - "Bulldlnfe America's Future." Wednesday, Nov. 12 "Strength enlng the Teaching Profession." Thursday, Nov. 13 "Supporting Adequate Education." Friday, Nov. 14 "Enriching Home and Community Life." Saturday, Nov. 15 "Promoting Health and Safety." The paramount aim of Amerlcuii Education Week this year Is to aia in constructing the defenses ol peace In the minds of men. The charter of the United Nations contains Ideals which churches cherish. Written Into the preamble of the United Nations' educational, scientific and cultural organization are purposes which schools and colleges col-leges uphold. These international developments place great responsibility responsi-bility upon religious and educational education-al forces to Interpret and advanci the basic program of U N and Uncs co. Churches, schools and colleges art called upon to accelerate their warfare war-fare against Ignorance, prejudice, disease, injustice, and oilier hazard to security. They help to win the battles of peace as they focus theli efforts upon spiritual values, brotherhood, broth-erhood, leadership to cope with world problems, Improvement ol governmental service, use of technology tech-nology for benefit of mankind, good school programs for all our people, human resources, Increased budgets for schools and churches, and Indl vVdual responsibility lor securing the peace. American Education Week offers of-fers timely opportunities for spotlighting spot-lighting these and many other problems prob-lems Involved In securing the peace. It Is a good time for educational and religious groups to Identify common areas of interests, fortify and coordinate their efforts toward mutual goals, mobilize action, tnd plan for tasks ahead. If given priority pri-ority of time and thought, the observance ob-servance this year can make no small Impact upon the problems of world understanding. |
