Show Mr. Miner Goes To His Daily Work Mechanization, Ventilation improves working conditions condi-tions in underground industry. The life of a miner is much the same as the life that you and I live. When he leaves home in the morning he generally drives to the mine or rides with fellow workers, work-ers, provided he lives too far from nig work to walk. Upon arrival at the mine, he enters the change room where he dons working clothes and a hard hat which is attached with lamp to light his way beyond the electric elec-tric lights undcrgrounn. There are a number of Jobs which require courage, skill and intelligence. If he is a eager, he takes his place at the controls of a huge electrically driven hoist which lowers and lifts the cages in a shaft. He may be a trammer operating a locomotive that pulls a string of cars. Or he may take his place at the controls of a mechanical mucker which scoops up ore or waste and loads it into a mine car. There is electrical work to be done and he may put in his shift wiring or he may be a timberman, who does his days work much the same as a carpenter. car-penter. If he is a drill operator he aa-Bumes aa-Bumes his post at the end of a liner or drifter and directs the machine ma-chine toward unnnown new ground. Machines have eliminated virtually all of the hand work of mining, and most underground workers are skilled in several or all phases of machine operation. After his days work has been completed he travels to surface via tram and hoist, and he then returns to the change room. Here he takes a shower in a modern sanitary shower room and dons regular clothing for his return home. |
