Show Wider Use Of A-Power Seen Strong Indications that top-level thinking within the Atomic Energy Commission is turning toward wider use of atomic power in energy-producing reactors, are appearing frequently in reports of discussions and in public addresses by members of the commission. AEC Commissioner Murray, for example, recently discussed potentials of atomic power in peaceful uses (which he said is an acute problem now) as well as In stockpiling uranium for defense purposes. According to Murray, there must be no slowup in production of uranium for manufacturing . of weapons of war, but at the same time American ingenuity must be used to apply nuclear energy to various types of industrial application. Any new uses of atomic power would, of necessity, mean an increased tempo in search and discovery of uranium deposits on th Colorado Plateau, construction of access roads either with or without adequate state participation, and additional federal assistance in such development. According to Murray, development of power reactors for application to Industrial use must be done by the government because firivate industry cannot "on a pure-y risk basis, undertake anything like the effort that the world atomic power problem demands." |
