Vernal Chamber Active, Intense In Promotion Vernal, Utah, has the most active chamber of commerce In the Colorado Plateau, so Vernal citizens say. Whether It is approval of a new Uintah High School or support of the Vernal Ham Sale that is needed, the Chamber will be there pushing; whether it is a lookout point for beautiful Ashley Valley overlooking Vernal or support of the Upper Colorado River Storage project that is needed, there will be Vernal Chamber members helping out. Ninety percent of the activity from the Chamber in the past year or more has been centered around the promotion of the Upper Colorado Itiver Storage project and its vital Echo Park Dam which would be located fifty miles northeast of Vernal just over the Colorado line, according to Dr. T. It. Iierger, Chamber president. Among those leading the drive for the project have been members ot the Vernal Chamber of Commerce S.ate Senator B. II. Stringham, chairman of the Colorado River Development Association of 21 Utah counties, and more recently publicity chairman of and member of the five-state committee which organized the Upper Colorado Grass Roots Committee, Inc.: L. Y. Siddoway, secretary-manager of the Vernal Chamber and secretary of Mr. Stringham's 21 counties group: Hugh W. Colton, East president of the Vernal Cham-er, a member of the Utah Water and Power Board and chairman of the Utah Grass Roots Committee: and C. R. Henderson, member of the chamber board of directors and chairman of the Uintah County Colorado Itiver Development Committee. ' Many of the ideas and suggestions that have successfully created the Interest and support of all citizens of the Upper Basin states came from Vernal leaders, who have been working closely under the direction of Utah's water director and member of the Colorado River Commission. In the field of agriculture and livestock, the Vernal Chamber lent their full support to the Vernal Ram Sale, which was originated by the Chamber, the Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show atid Sale, Vernal Rodeo and annual Bull Sale. Another Important function in this area were the tours of farms and Ashley National Forest to become better acquainted with the problems of the area. The calendar committee is for the second year offering a community events calendar and the retail merchants committee put on a successful Dollar Day event and a Christmas promotion, which inclnded a visit by Santa Claus with candy for all the children. The tourist pronation committee secured a lookout point at the west end i of Ashley alley overlooking the scenic beauties which surround Vernal, and they have also been active in securing better roads for the , Uintah Basin along with the read committee and are now In the process of publishing another brochure which will tell the visitors to the area of the many scenic attractions. The Industrial development committee has spent a great deal of time in making contact in promoting the construction of the Pacific Northwest natural gas pipeline from the San Juan Basin past Vernal into the Pacific Northwest. This Committee will continue to be active as Pacific Northwest moves their crews into the area this spring to lay the line. The line will serve Vernal city with natural gas as well as serve as a market for nearby oil fields. |
