The road seen winding along the river in the photo is considered an access road and is the only link between Gateway and Uravan. Walls of the canon have been found to contain rich uranium deposits and many mines are located here. Predicts Step-Up In U-Production A growing demand for uranium production over a long period of years is predicted by William B, Hall, general manager of the Vitro Uranium Company, who was guest speaker at a dinner meeting of the members of the Salt Lake Security Dealers Association In the Atla Club. The guest speaker said there are only 12 or more mines with known reserves of 100,000 tons of uranium ore in the entire United States today. He said that with a reactor program anticipated as a boon to production, it appears as though the nation by 1980, would have annual requirementsof 24.000 tons of uranium ottdt, TT we are talking la terms of .1 per cent U308, this would mean 8,000,000 tons," Mr. Hall declared. Mr. Hall pointed out that before Investment for nuclear power plants can be contemplated, the nation should establish a sizeable reserve of fissionable material. He said-"It looks as though a healthy Infant Industry, uranium Hill be with us for 20 years", and stressed the fact it Is already a $100,000,000 industry and the further fart that at the end of 1954 the capital Investment of the United States for atomic energy will total S.7 billion dollars. He pointed to the fact the present uranium acitlvlty had Its first impetus December, 2 1942 when the first ch.iln reaction occurred. |
