Show 2T The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, July 15, 1984 How to take great trips with your kids Michael Shoup by Newspapers Knight-Ridde- r All over America, Ma, Pa and the kids are hitting the road for their summer vacation. long-awaite- d You can see them headed for the shore, car sagging in the rear, children squeezed in among beach blan- kets and umbrellas and suitcases and games and books and all the other amenities needed for a week or two in the sun. You can see them on the inters in the same states, the crammed cars, some of the parents glassy-eyestaring and from the arduous 3ual task of keeping the children from each others throats and driving 12 hours a day at the same time. You have to have children to truly appreciate the logistics involved in this, whether it is a relatively simple trip or several thousand miles spread out over a week or two or three. You have to know what kind of vacation you want, too, and you have to plan carefully, very carefully, if you want to enjoy it. long-hauler- sullen-lookin- g 200-mi- It's one thing simply to plunk down the family at a single destination for a week or two, and quite another if the trip involves spending long periods locked together in a small compartment on ribbons of asphalt and concrete. What brings up the subject is not just its timeliness but the arrival on my desk of a book called How to Take Great Trips With Your Kids (Harvard Common Press, $8.95 paperback), written by Sanford and Joan Portnoy, a Massachusetts couple with two children, ages 8 and 10. I should tell you right now that a lot of books about travel find their way to my office, their authors full of hope for some mention or a kind word for their efforts. What made me look twice at this one were the facts that (a) the Portnoys have children of their own with whom they travel, and (b) he is a family psychologist and she is a specialist. Out of this arises, if not Socratic wisdom, some nt very good advice about how to get the most out of a family vacation and where to get the information youll need to plan it. The first and best advice, as timeworn as it is, is to plan. If youre a traveling salesman who logs 100,000 miles a year on your car, you probably wont want to contemplate a three-wee- k trip across America and back. Start by making compromises and selecting a vacation that appeals to everyone. Plan from there. What are the things you like to do together? Camping? Hiking? Daytripping? Are the children quiet and sedentary, bookworms and TV junkies? Or are they happiest when doing y things that keep them going until they collapse into bed at days end? Are they old enough to appreciate museums and historical homes? You have to look at the age of the children and whats been going on in the family that year and decide whats needed, said Joan Portnoy in high-energ- an interview. "Bad trips result from poor planning or from trying to do too much. One of the chapters in the book discusses how children ai different age levels can be expected to react to travel and how you can deal with the reactions. The limited attention span of a small child may necessitate shorter stays at museums and art exhibits, or frequent changes of pace. A teenager, on the other hand, may want to do exactly the opposite of what you want and, in fact, may find your interests downright pedestrian, if not just plain dumb. "What passes ... for sheer negativism is, in fact, a sincere attempt to develop an identity which feels clear and comfortable, write the Portnoys of this teenage phenomenon. It is helpful at such times if you can find ways to accommodate those developmental urges. Instead of rapping the children on their head or making unkind remarks about how little your intellect After five days of golfing, Castle hopping and Palace dining, the group went their separate ways; some to ride the Orient Express train to various destinations, some to London and Paris. My good wife Betsy and I, as planned, toured the eastern highlands of Scotland by automobile, looking for salmon fishing, accommodations, and good people. (We found that friendly, gracious people are the norm in Scotland.) Our first two nights were spent at Blathie House on the west bank of the River Tay, a few miles upstream from Scone Palace. Mrs. Brassie, our hostess, leasing the hotel from the owner, .Mr. Forsyth, was kind enough to include Betsy in the Saturday afternoon shopping spree at the local Church Fete (bazaar.) Friday I had fished the Earn River and Saturday the River Tay in front of Blathie House. Once a private estate home, now Blathie House is an operating hotel. They offer fishing in the summer, grouse and pheasant shooting in the fall. Most patrons are couples on holi- day during the summer months. Lovely rooms, excellent food, a very quiet atmosphere, and superb long walks along the River Tay are offered. What a thrill to jump a of grouse, or send a cock pheasant into the sky cackling in fright. To see a large Atlantic Salmon break water in the river Tay would not be forgotten. Information on the country houses and lodges of Scotland can be obtained from your local travel agent or by writing, British Tourist Authority, 612 Flower Street, Los Angeles, bre CA. 90017. From Blathie House we drove our rental car north on highway A9 to Grantown-on-SpeThe heather on the moors (hills or mountains where few trees grow) of Scotland was not yet in bloom. It was still early spring daffodil season. Many different species of the daffodil were in full glory. Their blooms brightened the rooms of all of our habitations. They seemed to grow wild. ..everywhere. The River Dee, near the town of Ballater and Balmoral Castle (the summer retreat of the Royal Family) reminded us of rivers in the Mountain West; large and rough, well gradiat-ed- , and very fishy. The Queen Mother fly fishes the River Dee, and her gillie (fishing guide and companion) recently tied and named a fishing fly for her. The Queen Mum has the reputation of being a grand fly fisherman. Fly fishing in Scotland for Atlantic Salmon is a far different sport than fly fishing for trout is in the United States. The average salmon weighs 12 being pounds with caught most weeks. Mounted fish on walls (the trophies) weigh 40 pounds. The fly fish is handled with two hands, 12 to 15 feet long, and the whole rod, line, and reel weighs A The nine guest bedrooms in the Lodge are more like suites than bedrooms. Bathrooms of 150 square feet provided all amenities including, the usual, wonderful, towel warming racks. At dinner in the evening, our host and owner of Tulchan Lodge filled us in on some of the history of Tulchan. The estate contains 23,000 acres. The Lodge was built in 1907 as a hunting and fishing lodge. Six miles of the River Spey is owned. The gun collec- tion displayed has been acquired from The Duchess of Windsor, wife of the late, Duke of Windsor, who abdicated his throne of England to marry the Duchess in 1937. When abdicating the Throne, the Duke took all the Royal Shotguns with him. They would have been left to him by his father, King George the Fifth. They have resided in a bank vault in New York City until the Duchess decided to sell them. The owner of Tulchan Lodge, Mr. G.S. Panchaud, has purchased these guns as they have become available. Most of the guns were gifts to the Royalty of England in the past three generations. The guns must have been very expensive. When Mr. Panchaud asked if the sports jacket I was wearing was Harris Tweed, I answered in the affirmative. He informed me that he owns the county of Harris, on Lewis Island, part of the Hebrides Islands of all 85,000 acres. I gasped. Scotland He also told of the wonderful fishing on his other estate on the River Dee, with its own castle, that he leases to a major oil company for their corporate entertaining use. Now having an insight, it was more of a wonder that the Tulchan Lodge is open to public accommodation. It is, and though expensive to spend only one night there as we did, and fish the same water as did King Edward the Seventh, well worth the effort and price. Forgot to mention that when I checked names of the fishing gillies at Tulchan, I wondered if I wasnt going to meet some of my long lost buddies from East High School. They were John Anderson, Allen Irvine, Warren Holbrook and Brian Milne. The Portnoys say rent a car old-tim- SLC BLACK HILLS OF SOUTH DAKOTA PASSION PLAY July Driving from Grantown-on-Spefollowing the River Spey, 15 miles on a secondary road, (the main highways in Scotland would to us be secondary roads, there is little freeway as we know it and most roads are barely wide enough for two cars to pass) we arrived at Tulchan Lodge. There on the hill we spied it. In clean, light tan stone, stood Tulchan Lodge overlooking the River Spey, one of the most famous salmon fishing rivers in Scotland. Having driven a few hundred yards, up hill, to the gravel parking area in front of the Lodge, we approached with caution. The entrance-wa- y with a massive door and five story tower rising above it, and in fact the meticulous clean well kept look of the whole, filled us with apprehension. The door was answered by an attractive Scots woman; she gave us a warm welcome. The entrance hall was mighty. My eye went immediately to the glass enclosed gun cases gn the walls. There were over 100 guns displayed, most matched pairs of Purdy, Holland & Holland, and other famous named shotguns. Elephant guns and other rifles were also in the collection. All were engraved, initialed, insets of birds and animals in gold were abundant. A quick conducted tour of the ground floor revealed two grand sitting rooms, a library to die for, a billiard room, and fishermans room. There were kitchens, pantries, wine cellars, servants quarters, farm offices, and a most impressive warming room This room was 15 x 20 with a carpeted floor and wooden walls. There were hanging racks for boots and clothing and lounging chairs for warming the body. After falling in the river when fishing, or after a cold rainy day shooting pheasants or grouse on the moors, this is the immediate place of retreat to warm up. The room was kept at 105 degrees; this temperature plus a dram (or a wee nip) of whisky (all scotch whisky is called whisky) warms a body I was told. up very well indeed There were more glass cases cone taining miniature replicas of steam engines. They could have been studied for hours, the workmanship and detail was amazing. All oil paintings and water colors gracing the walls were sporting in UNITED FROM Mountain West Tours Presents pounds, not ounces as in the U.S. Rin-goe- cense plates from different states?
