Show 5 8W i The Salt Late Tribune Sunday, July 15, 1984 Ki' Taking advantage of yarn sales Create a cutwork collar in new geometries. H ; the rage! Add special touches to wearing apparel By Erica Wilson n. Computer graphics are geo- metric, and the newest designs in furniture and fab- rics are triangles, circles and squares. If you want to be .right on next spring, you will be wearing pastel plaids, stripes on stripes or polka dots of all sizes. You will sit on furniture in brilliant jewel colors or soft pastels with high gloss, shaped like all the exciting Post Modern collecor Vladimir Kagans Eva tions chair. tV dresses will have broader shoulders and longer skirts, and youll be wearing lots of white, or colors, or dark pur- bright rusts, browns, golds and slate Eles, In fabrics, triangles and squares will replace the flowered, lacy look, eyelet especially in embroidery. day-glo- white-on-whi- f1 Its i Were rushing into the computer age and discovering new things every day. Leaving fashion designers to set trends, Vogue groups and Vogue-Butteri- categorizes them so that you can stay ahead, yet find the perfect style for you. Its the individual touches that you can give a handmade garment that make it unique. Choose a pattern with simple lines so you can add cutwork with the new wave geometric look. Then, you can add embroidery at the waist of a cropped top, or on an oversized collar, or on the hem of a skirt. To do cutwork successfully, first work running stitches around all the outlines of the design. Buttonhole closely over these running stitches and cut close to the buttonhole stitch only after the whole design is completed. A good design to start with is shown in the fashion section of Erica Wilsons Needlework to Wear (published by Oxmoor House). Look for it in your local library or write to my store, 717 Madison Ave., New York, N.Y. 10021, with a check for $19.95 postpaid. Cutwork looks different, but is surprisingly easy to do and fits right in with the torn look, with its strategically placed holes in garments, and all the sheer and mesh fabrics that vll keep you cool and right in vogue for this summer. Say it with stitches! Must reading for the serious needleworker, with 21 traceable designs for crewel and needlepoint, plus alphabets for stitching your own favorite sayings. Designs that can form a frame for your words also are included in this magnificently Illustrated guide. For a postpaid copy, send $3 to Stitches," in care of The Salt Loke Tribune, P.O. Box ill. (Pot's Pointers: Th Naadlapont Midsummer is traditionally a time of yarn sales in most areas, so this seems an excellent time to talk about making the most of such sales. A little preparation before you shop can reap big rewards. Most of us find it hard to resist a bar gam, but all too often we buy on impulse at a sale only to discover we have brought home unsuitable colors, incorrect quantities or odd dye lots. Make some notes before you leave home on colors that will blend in with your home decorating scheme or your wardrobe. If you are trying to match a particular garment, you might snip out a little fabric swatch from a seam to be sure you get a good match. Then sit down with your collection of pattern leaflets and books and jot down yarn types and requirements for appealing designs. Dont forget to take these notes with you so you will know how many skeins you need to complete a project. Knitting Types Be sure also to give some thought to the type of knitting that most appeals to you. If you like to do intricate pattern stitchery, you are better off with light colors and smooth textures that show off the patterns to a better advantage. On the other hand, if simple, basic stitches are your cup of tea, look for the fancier yarns to create smashing effects. If you are not a fast or patient knitter, you had better leave the very fine yarns alone and look for the heavier or bulkier ones. With some of the new yams on the market, you can sometimes find lightweight bulkies. Often at sales, you will find stacks of yarns that look alike but are actually from different dye lots. You seldom can detect shade differences when comparing two skeins, but when the yarn is used in knitting, crocheting or even needlepoint, odd dye lots can show glaring differences in shading. Often Best Buys The odd dye lots are often the best buys, so I suggest you use them in patterns using more than one color. Even simple stripes of two or more colors will allow you to use odd dye lot yarns. A stripe of a different dye lot will not be noticeable when separated by stripes of contrasting color. These odd dye lots can be real bonanzas for those of you who are addicted to needlepoint on plastic canvas because you seldom need more than a skein or two of knitting yarn for these projects. So stretch your needlework budget For the woman on the go, heres a super sweater to take you anywhere looking your feminine best. The poin-tell- e lace pattern is designed to flatter any outfit.
