Show 8E The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, July 15, 1984 The incredible journey of Koyaanisqatsi you've ever seen before. Koyaamsquatsi is a Hopi word meaning life out of balance. As Reggio points out in a postscript to his film, another translation is "a way of life that calls for another way of living." During the course of his film, the former Christian Brother juxtaof sandposes images of nature stone monoliths, of waves and clouds, of rippling sand and images of civilization giant concrete nuclear reactors, freeways with streams of cars, escalators and endless lines of people. While Koyaanisquatsi is a film full of images and sound, it also is a film of ideas. As the camera captures the incredible majesty of mountain peaks being caressed by clouds, there is a sense of reverence and awe. The film soothes you as an ocean wave churns into itself. A littered beach with a giant nuclear plant looming in the background and decrepit tenaments with garbage spilling into the streets are testaments to destitute urban environments. Conveyor belts stamp out thousands of hot dogs and Twinkies for our consumption. Visitors to a shopping mall gulp down greasy lunches. We are creatures of convenience. There is a cold detachment here, especially on the faces of the people. A boy nervously plays a video game, a movie audience twitches its way through the main feature. People are nervous, pale and hollow-eyee is evil But not all that is and sterile. Reggio makes a comparison between the towering sandstone sculptures of Monument Valley and the walls of glass that reflect blue sky lized world, the An d. e o o o o o o o o Featuring live Dudetand Music, Salt Lake Good Time Jazz Band. In fact the whole film often resembles a finely choreographed dance in which image and sound mesh as one. The other art form Koyaanisqatsi brings to mind is poetry.
