Their ability to translate that ll knowledge into precise and shipments of roof and floor trusses has led to spectacular growth of their company, Architectural Business Officiates, Inc. In March, the Whatleys moved their business into the worlds largest truss manufacturing plant on the north side of Mabank. Our dad worked on houses all his life so we know the needs of the truss business, said Tom, 31, the chairman of ABO. Easy to Figure Out The carpenter wants the product on time, when he needs it He wants it to fit when he gets it and he doesnt want to spend a lot of time scratching his head trying to figure out how to get it to fit" ABO packages and color codes its roof and floor trusses so the products will arrive on the job site ready to be used, without lengthy sorting and stacking operations. We try to make the transition from architects drawing and carry it to the point that the guy on the fork who may not even be able to lift can understand, speak English Whatley said. ABO gross revenue was under $1 million in 1979. Sales climbed to 32.2 million in 1980, $2.5 million in 1981, $5.2 million in 1982 and $10.3 million in 1983. easy-to-insta- Now Employ 180 In that time ABOs work force has grown from about 10 employees to 180. ABO sells its products to builders in Texas, northern Louisiana, eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, but its main market is the nearby and Dallas-Fog Worth area. Bart Whatley began his own construction business in the 1970s, while Tom was in the Air Force and later studying for a business degree at East Texas State in Commerce. In rt v 1977, father Otis sold the business to his sons. Basically from 1977 to 1980 it was just my brother and me, with five to 10 workers, Tom Whatley said. We handled management, sales, administration, all of it. We had to learn every part of the operation. We didnt even know where to put copies of our invoices. It was in this period that ABO be- gan concentrating exclusively on truss making. Our growth started happening in Tom said. We convinced Danny Conway to join us. He heads up our sales today. But he and I got out and started selling trusses for multifamily jobs. In June, only 18 percent said subdivision traffic was high to very high. Although NAHB is expecting as decline in sales much as a and production later this year, Mr. Colton said the economy was at crossroads and could go either way. The conventional wisdom Is that interest rates will continue to climb," be said. That might be true for the immediate future, but theres no real justification for todays record high real Interest rates. The down payment on the deficit has cleared Congress. Inflation remains below 5 percent and shows no signs of reigniting. Private credit demands can be expected to decline as the pace of expansion winds down." project book that typically may con- tain 20 or 30 pages. When the project is started, the builder and framer must do a thorough review of the project book and sip off on it, giving ABO the authority to proceed. This is a double check to make sure all plans are correct before manufacturing begins and also protects ABO. A half-inc- h mistake on a load of trusses can just kill you at a job site, Bart Whatley said. Trusses are made from southern yellow pine grown and produced in east Texas, Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Lumber accounts for about half of ABOs expenses. CoaskleriBg Expansion As they rush around trying to manage their present business and rapid expansion, the Whatleys occasionally look into the future their future and ABOs future. They could expand ABO into other regions, possibly by buying smaller truss makers. They could issue stock and become a publicly held corporation. Or they could keep ABO and start another business, using property they own behind their parents house where ABO built trusses before expansion into its present modern office and production plant I feel we have built up a management team of people a nucleus who will do well at anything we undertake, Tom Whatley said. Cast Iron Is Still Good Tub Choice Special to The Tribune Bathtubs have come a long way in the past few decades and today there is a wide variety of materials and colors for your bathroom. g InThe formation Bureau points out, howev- er, that the old standby, porcelain enameled cast iron, still is an excel- lent choice when durability and lasting beauty are primary concerns. Since cast iron is a rigid material the baked enamel finish will not crack from being flexed, nor is It easily chipped, scratched or stained. The surface of the enamel is similar to dinnerware and, as with abrasive cleansers should not be used. The glass-lik- e surface can be easily cleaned with a mild household detergent Todays cast iron tubs come in a large selection of porcelain enamel colors to complement almost any color bathroom decor. Two-ton- e combinations are available as well as matte finish, those with a Units are available with whirlpools and grab bars, in styles for installation as sunken tubs, as well as more models for inconventional five-fostallation In a recessed area with a wall surrounding of ceramic tile or other material CHICAGO Plumbing-Heating-Coolin- low-glo- - Smith-Helme- V ss ot Housing Starts Drop 9.8 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) California housing starts dropped nearly 10 percent In May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 217,900 units. Mays housing starts were 9 8 percent lower than Aprils, following a national decline in housing construction linked to rising interest rates. According to economists Michael r, Salkin and Michael both with the Bank of America, it was the first time since October 1981 that construction of single-famil- y housing fell below multi-famil- y units. Single-famil- y unit construction decreased 21 percent In May while : in California overall, multifamily unit construction increased 3 5 percent. The seasonally adjusted annual rate for building permits increased 2.1 percent to 233,000 in May while the national rate fell by 1.3 percent Economists say that is a sign of continued confidence by builders In the California housing market Another good sign comes from the sales figures for existing houses. Those sales Increased at a seasonally adjusted rate of 468,000 units In May, a 13.7 percent jump from the previous month due in part to the use of adjustable-rat- e mortgages. v . -- i |
