Show Roundup brings the pioneer spirit to Dino Georgalis, general manager of Salt Lake Marriott, has lived in Salt Lake City for about four years. He's been general manager of the hotel since it opened, and this will be the fiurth Days of 47 celebration hes t.ne coserved. Georgalis is an enthusiastic booster cf Salt Lake City. Hes convinced that, given the nght push, it could be another world class tourist destination. We have everything Switzerland offers, plus more, he noted. "The Swiss dont have deserts, they dont have canyons, they dont have a saltwater lake. And one of the big tourist attractions, he predicts, could be the monthlong Days of 47 observance. Too many people think the Days of 47 is just a big parade. They dont realize that the celebration involves many activities extended over several days, he said. He caught a glimmer of this Last year, when the Marriott hosted two one involvimportant conventions ing convention meeting planners from across the nation and the other for the National Association of Exhibition Managers. We had them here and we did the typical tours, but we wanted to do something different to show off Salt Lake City and Utah, he said. He explained that when the convention and exhibit planners hold their meetings at various sites across the country, they normally get the routine Chamber of Commerce style speeches, buffets, etc. So we tried something that took a lot of money and a lot of effort to show them the history and evolution of culture in Utah, he said So, with the full cooperation of the scenery design experts at Promised Valley Playhouse, he transformed the entire grand ballroom into a scene of what Salt Lake City might have looked like in years past Seeing that the convention visitors really enjoyed learning more about Utahs Old West roots and culture gave Georgalis the impetus to experiment with a similar approach during the Days of 47 celebration. Visitors associate Utah with the wild west because of all the John Wayne westerns that were filmed here. So I thought to myself, If thats what they want, lets give it to them. Wlule the actual Mormon Pioneer movement was not, in itself, entirely there are others who have unique also been forced to move on due to the spint of pioneering is adversity universal, and this pioneer spirit is what Georgalis would like to see injected into the Days of '47 observance. Lets honor all pioneers, whoever and whatever they might have been. So, this year, Georgalis is taking a gamble. From July 16th through the 24th, the Marriotts opulant lobby will take on its Old West look. Fake fronts are being constructed especially for the Marriott Hotel lobby. The hotel gift shop will become a general store. Gambits, the hotels intimate lounge area, will become a saloon. The front desk and customer service area will resemble a bank and Wells Fargo station. To spearhead the project, Georgalis contacted David Shaw, then marketing manager for Promised Valley Playhouse. David, who has recently left PVT and works in the visual aids division in the Church Office Building, turned the actual construction project over to Scott Morgan, a seminary teacher and carpenter in Orem. Morgan is able to utlize his exper K7 tise in his two fields in this project his broad background in church history, which is a boon in researching the look and authenticity of the various storefronts, and his carpentry skills. Morgan has obtained the services of BYU scenery designer Carl Pope to do the blueprints and design work. Morgan will construct the scenery at his home He expected there would be 2 people involved in the scenery construction before the project is completed. 10-1- Morgan noted that the scenery in the lobby wont be just flat backdrops, but actual construction featuring windows, doors and materials which will give it an authentic Old West feeL All of the hotels public contact employees will wear jeans and cowboy hats, to further carry out the Wild West theme. In addition, on July 19, 20 and 21, the grand ballroom will once again be decorated in Old West motif. The chuckwagon feed will begin at 5 p m. each night and continue until midnight or . . . whatever. The Marriott Roundup will include western grub. For patrons will obtain admission to the Marriott Roundup, dinner, entertainment and two hours of validated parking, plus a ticket stub for prize drawings later in the evening. There will also be prizes for those who come dressed in their best cowboy garb. $7-9- Shes a little bit country Joan Larsen looks right at home in the country setting at Pioneer Trail State Park, which will be with tours, exhibits and lots of special events. For celebrating the Days of '47 from July information on the activities, call 21-2- 4 533-588- Entertainment will include two western bands, and dancing. Performing during the Roundup are the Cathy Ritch-Dav- e Smith band of Salt Lake City and the Tiger Bell band from California. , BRING ADuFOR PRICES This is our way of saluting the Days of 47, said Georgalis. I hope this idea will snowball and that others will jump on the bandwagon (or chuckwagon, if you will) and try the same thing later on. jnn Just for Filling Out Our Application ft ffACU. 13, 1384 Sunday, July citizen modern-da- y For three days during the Days of 47 celebration, part of downtown Salt Lake City will take on some of the colorful flavor of the internationally renowned Calgary Stampede.
