Show 4D Sundav, July IS. 1W4 The Salt Lake Tribune Heath Captures X -- Ute By Lex Hemphill Tribune Sports Writer For Ed Heath, tennis success is coming a little later in life. Heath, two years beyond his college playing days, reached heights he didnt gain as a collegiate player, as Love-- 5 mens d he won the tournament Saturday by beatsingles ing Weber State product Eric Styr-mo- e 4 in the mens final under a n sun at the Salt Lake hot Swimming and Tennis Club. Heath played near the bottom of the singles ladder for the University of Utah in the middle years of the Utes current reign over the other Western Athletic Conference tennis rivals. He won WAC singles titles while playing at No. 6 in 1981 and at No. 5 in 1982. He certainly contributed to the Utes success in those years, but he wasnt a dominant player. Now, he figures, hes playing better than he ever did forthe Utes. I guess maybe I started playing tennis seriously a little later, said Heath after collecting a $1,000 check for his victory Saturday. McEnroe and Fleming, the worlds premier doubles team, struggled for most of the afternoon before they were able to put away Jose Luis Martin Jaite, Cletc and giving the United Stales an unbeatable 0 lead over Argentina. J couldnt stay awake the first couple of sets, McEnroe said, explaining his minor outbursts of temper. It was really pathetic. I wanted to make it interesting and it was really (ough to get up for a match like this. Ive been playing a lot the last couple of months and mentally Im frld out. 7-- 5, 4-- 6-- 3, 6-- 1, 3-- Fleming, interjected, The whole atrflosphere seemed dead. As brilliant as he was in winning thei opening singles from Clerc Friday night, McEnroe couldnt get into h&msual groove in the doubles, and hejsaw his service broken three win-ner- of 28-3- timres. In addition, the Wimbledon singles ana doubles champion became annoyed at the small but vocal group of Argentine supporters in the Omni, and he also had an angry conversation with Clerc during the third set. Referring to his tirade with the Argentine fans, McEnroe said, I told them if they were to act improperly that was one less game they were going to get. However, McEnroe did manage to hold his temper on a few occasions when he was visibly upset with line calls, settling for a slow boil. In the fourth set after a call went against him, he screamed loudly at a linesman, America, an obvious reference that he felt they should be on his side. Believe me, we never get any good calls when youre playing out of this country, he explained later. In Sundays singles now reduced to exhibition status, McEnroe is scheduled to play Jaite and Jimmy Connors meets Clerc. Connors gave the United States its second point Friday night by beating Jaite in straight sets. Once in the second set and twice in the third, the United States broke service only to give it back in the following game. McEnroe was broken in the 10th game of the second set when he was long with a backhand volley, allowing Argentina to win the set. There were four consecutive service breaks to open the third set before the Americans finally took charge by breaking Clerc in the seventh game at love and Jaite at 30 in the ninth. break, Following a McEnroe and Fleming made short work of the fourth set, sweeping through the final five games. My legs were tired today, McEnroe said. Mentally Im tired. I'm glad this tie is over. d The United States avenged a loss to Argentina in 1983. ' Put this all year round, and I was 18 then. I played tennis seriously before that, but only half the year. When Heath left high school in Oregon, he played at Foothill (Calif ) Junior College before joining Harry James' program at Utah. Since his Ute playing days ended, hes continued to help James as the Utes assistant coach and as a pro at the Hamilton Racquet Club, while he works toward a masters degree at the U. He finally took the set by breaking in the ninth, taking set point by rushing net return and after a second-servic- e watching Styrmoe net a forehand. The point appropriately demonstrated that Heath, while not intimidating at the net, was the one forcing the action, as he did throughout the after- years and the reigning Intermountain champ, having beaten Heath in last summers final. It had Utahs 1984 No. 1, John Tsumas, who defaulted his first match, and Jeff Robbins, a past Ute No. 1 who beats Heath in practice, Ed confessed, but who was beaten by sickness in this tournament. 3-- But in the end, the field had Heath who and Styrmoe, the upset-makEber in the had ousted the semis. Styrmoe saved that one with a service winner, but then he netted a backhand pass and, in one of his infrequent forays to the net, a backhand volley to give Heath the victory.
