(AP) members of the destroyer USS OBannon, which made naval history by using a barrage of potatoes to sink a Japanese submarine, held a reunion near Pittsburgh this weekend. Veterans of the OBannon, once known as the ship with the halo, survived 36 engagements during World War II. About 20 of the ships 339 officers and crewmen got together at a Monroeville hotel. The ships most celebrated battle took place near the Solomon Islands in 1943, said Bud Moreau, a Braddock Hills resident and the reunions organizer. The destroyer fired on a Japanese submarine and damaged its conning tower, preventing it from submerging, Moreau said. But because the OBannon was only 50 feet from the sub, its deck guns couldnt depress far enough to sink the vessel, Moreau said. American sailors, fearing the Japanese would come topside to fire their own guns, hauled potatoes out of storage bins and threw them at the sub, Moreau said. The Japanese "thought they were hand grenades, Moreau said. That kept them away from their deck liAM) Ki Indoor Antenna (riiteJ CR-- 6 b posit on switch XHFUHF f 'j' our everyday lo.v price FriWirl I A h rJ Wnf 1 vV m DOUBLE COUPON Coupon Good At All Gibsons Discount Centers. The crew even received a congratulatory plaque from the Potato Growers Association of Maine for their heroic use of potatoes, Moreau said. Get a free seat at the Rodeo!
