Show The Park Record D Section C- Augh! Miners still winless after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.' Page C6 B Thursday, September 1 5, 1994 continued from C1 plays later the Spartans were in the end zone and up 7-0. . The Miners did little on their next possession, but the defense recovered an Emery fumble at the 23-yard line and gave the offense its first chance to score. Three plays led nowhere, and the Miners were forced to settle for Mike Martinez's 37-yard field goal to get them on the board. It continued to be a quarter for the Miner defense. Another fumble recovery on Emery's next possession led to the first of Tatton's three touchdown passes, and the first of two Tatton-to-Chason Memmont TD strikes. ti .... ' s-. "" 1 v A dejected Joe Pack reflects the mood of the Miners and their fans after losing 33-30. Tatton hit Memmont at midfield and after one move got him free, Memmont . sprinted down the sideline to put the Miners up 9-7. The point-after was blocked, but another Emery fumble at the end of the first quarter gave the Miners yet another opportunity. Once again, Tatton found Memmont, this time over the Emery deep man in the corner of the end zone. Martinez hit the PAT and the Miners led 16-7. This time, Emery never got to run a play from scrimmage, as Park City recovered a Spartan fumble on the kickoff return at the Emery 32. On third-and-7 from the 29, Tatton connected with sophomore Ted Hunsaker out of the backfield at the 15 and Hunsaker scored Park City's third touchdown of the game. Martinez made it 23-7 with 9:14 to go in the half. In spite of the positive vibe at Dozier Field, things began to unravel for the Miners. A Mike Ward interception on the next Emery possession the fourth straight Spartan turnover went for naught as the Miners couldn't keep the offense going and were forced to punt. The Park City kick was blocked and recovered by the Spartans at the 14-yard line with 5:22 to play in the half. A touchdown and two-point conversion cut the lead to 23-15 and on Park City's first play from scrimmage, Emery intercepted a Tatton pass and returned the ball inside the Miner 10. Two plays later and the score was tied at 23 after another two-point play. The Miners ran three plays and were forced to punt again, but this time Ryan Harder never got the kick off. The snap went over his head and into the end zone, where he touched it down for a safety and a 25-23 Emery lead. At the half, "We the coaches challenged 'em," said coach Gary Anderson. The challenge paid off at first. The Miners kicked off and after just three plays forced Emery to punt. The Park City offense then went on a 13-play drive from their own 43 that culminated in a five-yard five-yard Ward touchdown run behind a big block by Brian Whitteron. The drive ate up most of the third quarter, and heading into the final 12 minutes, Park City led 30-25. A Miner fumble with 10:44 to go gave Emery the ball at their own 30. On their first play, Ward sacked Spartan quarterback Adam Stilson all the way back at his own 17 and things looked good for the Miners. But missed tackles after a little dump pass on the next play gave Emery a third-and-7 from their 33. Stilson hit deep for a completion that put the Spartans all the way down at the Miner 31. Five plays later, the Miners were trailing again, 33-30. Park City took over possession with just under seven minutes to play. The running of the senior fullback Ward was the engine behind the drive that took Park City into Emery territory. "Tough is a good word for it," said Anderson afterwards. "The kids tasted victory early." Anderson again focused on the bright spots for the Miners, and said that mental mistakes were the team's undoing. "Physical mistakes, we can handle that. Do we like 'em - no... The mental mistakes are what we can't have. Mentally, we let 'em Emery back in. Mentally, we need to pick it up." For bright spots, Anderson had a list of things: "We have an offense that can move the football, that can score, that can do some things, that that can stone people and get things done. We need to build on that" Other Park City highlights! included the tough play of Ward, ! whose hard-nosed running helped ! power the Miner ground game, and J the kicking of Martinez, which in time could provide Park City with a J valuable weapon. The selections for last Friday's heartbreaking loss to Emery are Brian Krall on defense and senior quarterback Randy Tatton on offense. Krall "was solid on offense and defense all day long," said coach Gary Anderson. The senior lineman was credited eight tackles and four quarterback hurries. "He was a key to our running game in the second half," added Anderson. Tatton threw for three touchdowns in the first half and had a 300 yards passing in the game. "He did a great job of reading," assessed the coach. "He had by far his best game. He's gaining confidence which is by far the biggest factor. SUZZUCCD.
