With the rallying cry of "Seatbelts, everyone!" she sets yet another wacky and exciting field trip Rocky Mountain Dancers celebrate 15 years It was 15 years ago that several alumni of the Brigham Young University Folk Dance Ensemble decided they wanted to dance in Europe just one more time before hanging up their shoes. It took them 18 months to put a two-hour program together, and in 1981, the troupe, performing under the name of the Rocky Mountain DAncers, made a seven-week tour of Europe, which included performances at festivals and international gatherings in Norway, Denmark, France, Spain and Switzerland. When the group returned to the United States, the weary dancers disbanded. But a year later, two or three members who still hadn't had enough, recruited new members, obtained new costumes and put the show back together. A second international tour was planned to Austria and Belgium in 1983, and the group has been taking America's traditional dance and musical heritage to the nations of the world ever since. Directed by George Frandsen and Bart Skinner, the troupe performs a variety of traditional American dances, such as pioneer round dances, and, of course, Monsters Fanciful creatures, smiling beasts and whimsical monsters from your childhood nightmares will be displayed in the Loge Gallery of Pioneer Memorial Theatre by artist Carole Doubek through Oct 1,1994 Doubek's show "i ings That Go Bump in the Night" is an assortment of soft sculpture creatures created from Doubek's imagination and from the many reptiles she acquired and kept as pets. Using her pets as a starting point, she sometimes depicts them realistically and sometimes dresses them up with glitter, sequins and fabrics rich in texture. Strong and unflappable, always in control no matter how bizarre the situation, Ms. Frizzle's passion, patience and love of science make her the kind of unforgettable teacher who inspires students for a lifetime. At the center of the series is The Magic School Bus, Ms. Frizzle's partner in adventure, which readily transforms itself into a spaceship, blimp or submarine to accommodate whatever science expedition Ms. Frizzle has in mind, transporting the class through time and space on a hair-raising, cliff-hanging cliff-hanging field trip. Each week, in an entertaining and educational half- America's national dance, the y square dance. Fifteen international tours have taken the dancers and musicians to China, Lithuania, Poland, Mexico, Puerto Rico, CAnada, and virtually every nation of western Europe. In January of 1995, the troupe will return to the International Folk Festival of Puerto Rico, and in the summer, .the troupe hopes to accept invitations to The Ukraine and Russia. Highlights of the troupe's 15 years include two performances for Denmark's Queen Margarethe II, shows for two presidents of Austria, and numerous television appearances in Europe, the Soviet Union and Mexico. Although the primary focus of the performer is on exhibition rather than competition, the dancers were awarded the $7,000 first prize at the Festival of the Almond Blossom in Agrigento, Sicily, in 1985. In 1983, the troupe was the subject of an Austrian television documentary filmed in Krems, Austria. With its 15th anniversary in 1994, the troupe is celebrating by increasing its repertory of dances with the help of the nationally on exhibit in a way that entertains and educates. As a public service, I recycle polyester double-knit clothing (of the hideous variety) whenever possible, as it makes perfect reptile skin," states Doubek. 'Things That Go Bump in the Night" will be on display on the mezzanine level of the Pioneer Theatre at Broadway (300 South) and University St. (1340 East) in Salt Lake City. The exhibit is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday mornings till noon.
