We have been named the best managed state government and the number one state for business by national magazines in recent years. As Senate chairman of many committees, I have been a key player in attaining this status. It is important to recognize the diversity of this Senate District and work to represent that diversity, looking ahead to the future. We need to protect our habitat and environment while making room for economic and residential growth and protecting individual freedoms. Political experience: Fifteen-year involvement in the political arena, first time candidate. Community service experience: Fund-raiser for Boy Scouts of America; chairman and board member of the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Utah, a nonprofit non-profit organization. Platform: I wish to see a new emphasis on the education of our children. I believe it to be an answer to other social problems, i.e. youth gangs, unemployment, etc. We have got to provide education, jobs and hope for the future if we expect them to compete in national and international marketplaces. Stronger response to violent crime is our first priority; to protect our families from repeat violent offenders. We need more police officers and more jail space. With regard to water and other natural resources: Needless to say, if we do not better manage projected growth, our economy in District 26 will eventually disintegrate. Platform: Crime and the quality of life are the two biggest concerns that I have. Even though these are two very broad topics, they have reference to very specific items. Such as judicial review, juvenile delinquency, water research and procurement, land conservation easements and school financing for easier accessibility.
