Thomas Flinders Candidate for Commission Seat A How long an area resident? My family came to the Shyderville Basin in the late 1940s. I have spent my life living in Summit County. I attended Marsac Elementary and graduated from Park City High School in 1965, where I was on the basketball team, played football and was a distance runner on the Park City track team. Party affiliation: I have filed as a Republican candidate. However, in local politics, I believe we should look to the person much more than the party affiliation. Occupation: I am a rancher and small businessman specializing in farm and ranch sales. Education: I attended the University of Utah for four years in the field of business management in accounting, and have a broker's license. Political experience: : I was elected to the Board of Summit County Commissioners in 1984 and served from 1985 to 1988. 1 served as its chairman for two years and on several councils, both local and state from planning and zoning to the first commission who helped organize Rails to Trails. Community service experience: I have always been most interested in youth and youth programs. Preparing our youth to take the reins of tomorrow is perhaps the best investment in our future. I have been given several certificates of appreciation from the Executive Council of the Great Salt Lake Council of the Boy Scouts of America for my help in Scouting with respect to Utah and the Ail-American Ail-American Jamboral. Platform: My campaign slogan is "Protect Our Future." I understand the mountain and rural character of our county and the growth pressures that are causing change. I have a major commitment to manage growth sensibly so that the desires and needs of the majority of Summit County residents can be met, while protecting our rural and mountain environment. 1 would like to help build consensus between the resorturban issues of the Snydcrville Basin and the rural concerns of the eastern side of the county. I believe water must dictate every decision the county makes with respect to our future growth. I measure government in terms of its responsiveness to county residents. Through better communication and elimination of red tape, Summit County government can function more effectively. A high priority for Summit County should be more recreational opportunities for the youth. More opportunities are needed for youth participation. Platform: "Growth for the sake of growth is the logic of the cancer cell." Abbey. I'll oppose new development when we don't have adequate water, police protection or classrooms. Our open space is priceless. I helped preserve Aspen Springs Meadow, the Osguthorpe Farm and the wetlands at Willow Ranch and Treasure Mountain Middle School. New subdivisions must proyide open space as a condition of approval. Recreational facilities and playing fields are a critical need. New development should pay its fair share of acquiring these facilities. County government must be responsive to the needs of its citizens. I've earned a reputation for getting things done., and I'll put my skills to work as a County Commissioner. Ruth Wagner Ruth Wagner Candidate for Commission Seat A . How long an area resident?
