This year's event will feature a premiere screening of a segment of Ken Bums' 18 and a half 12 hour made-for-television history of baseball. Bums is the award-winning documentary film maker who produced the Civil War series which aired on public television. The festival also includes premieres of new films by Werner Herzog, Louis Malle and Chuck Jones. In addition there is a category devoted to new writers and directors entitled "Filmmakers of Tomorrow. Telluride Times-Journal CCC camp becomes registered historic site The original Dalton Wells Civilian Conservation Corps campsite, built in 1935 and located on U.S. 191 four miles south of the Canyonlands Airport, has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. For a few months in 1943 the abandoned CCC facility was used as an internment camp for Japanese-Americans Japanese-Americans who were illegally detained during World War II. About 50 Japanese Americans were imprisoned at the Dalton Wells Camp. According to the Times-Independent some of the prisoners were college graduates and some were even veterans of World War I. "This was a low point in our treatment of our Japanese American citizens," the article said. The prisoners were eventually moved to another internment camp in April of that year and today little remains on the site. The Grand County Historic Preservation Commission, however, is planning to place a memorial there to remind visitors about the mistakes that were made. V THE TRAIL Springs Colo, was closed off when heavy rains triggered a mudslide on Storm King Mountain. The debris came from the slopes where 14 firefighters recently lost their lives. In places the highway was buried under as much as six feet of mud and broken tree trunks which took 12 hours to clear away. Several cars were caught in the mudslide and two people were injured but no one was killed. Jackson Hole News Controversy surrounds fire in Grand Teton Park One of Jackson's mayoral candidates has criticized the way Grand Teton National Park officials recently handled their first response to a brush fire. According to Candidate Gene Downer, "the initial response to the fire was inadequate...and the subsequent fire endangered lives and destroyed property." The criticism follows reports that the first firefighter to spot the blaze was told not to drive over sagebrush. Because of that order he was not able to reach the fire with his truck's hose. Park officials have responded that the order was given partly because of concerns about natural resources but also because of concerns about the safety of the firefighter who was an unexperienced seasonal employee. Stock broker charged with securities fraud Vail's financial consultant, Scott Chaussee has been arrested and charged with one count of securities fraud. The charge is a Class 3 felony and carries a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison. The case is being investigated by the Colorado Attorney General's office and the Vail police. Chausee owns a financial services business in Vail and officials there are asking that anyone who believes they may also have been victimized to contact them. Mud slides follow fires on Colorado Interstate A four-mile stretch of Interstate 70 near Glenwood Mining may be OK in Sawtooth Rec Area Idaho environmentalists are troubled about a proposal to reopen silver mining operations in a section of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. They are particularly upset because some of the mining could occur on areas currently under study for wilderness designation. The proposal comes from AB Mining Enterprises which wants to reopen an old mine on Abe's Chair Mountain near Smiley Creek. Representatives from the company claim they will be sensitive to the natural beauty of the area but environmentalists are characterizing the proposal as "a real nightmare." A representative of the Sawtooth Wilderness Council said the proposed access road to the area would be visible from Smiley Creek and would "outrage residents there."
