The production premieres in Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre on Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m., with evening performances continuing on Oct. 10, 12 and 14, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 16. A work of epic proportions, Aida portrays both the colossal event of nations at war, and the intimacy of a secret, forbidden love. The opera focuses on the mutual love of Aida, an Ethiopian princess enslaved at the Egyptian court, and Radames, captain of the Egyptian army. Radames leads the Egyptians in battle against the Ethiopians, and returns victorious with a multitude of prisoners from the enemy ranks, including Aida's father Amonasro, the King of Ethiopia. Amonasro convinces the emotionally-torn Aida to trick Radames into revealing the battle strategy for the Egyptian army. The Egyptian king's daughter Amneris, who is fiercely jealous of Radames' love for Aida, turns him in as a traitor. Radames is sentenced to be sealed in a subterranean vault beneath the temple, and as the door closes, discovers that Aida has secluded herself within the crypt to share his fate. Utah Opera's 1994 Aida unveils a new production created in collaboration with L'Opera de Montreal and Pittsburgh Opera. When Utah Opera discovered the Photographic exhibit depicts artist's The artist speaks: For me, a woman's body represents the core of being, a world of safety, a vehicle for life. They say a woman may explore the traumas and broken romances of the outer world, but she can always retreat to the warmth, fertility and nourishment of the form that is her own. But what happens when breast cancer, which strikes where her motherly and sensual aspects are combined, comes knocking at her door? My doctor recommended a mastectomy. I made the most of my last days as Venus de Milo, photographing myself each day and making plans to document my operation and follow-up treatment. While I was undergoing chemotherapy, my surgeon told me that I hadn't really needed a mastectomy in the first place. "You could have done with a lumpectomy." So I lost a breast and the world gained an activist. During my "treatment" for breast cancer I met hundreds of ' . paucity of viable Aida rental sets in North America, the company actively pursued partnerships with several companies to make the design and construction of a new production financially feasible. The resulting set makes its premiere in Utah Opera's Aida, before traveling to the partner companies and further North American opera companies who are renting it for their own production of this Verdi masterpiece. Utah Opera is pleased to announce a cast of singers and a production team whose experience and reputation highly qualify them for this most demanding opera. In the title role of Aida is soprano Marquita Lister, who garnered enthusiastic acclaim for her appearance in this role at Houston Grand Opera, where she was described as "an impressive Aida, both vocally and visually...If Lister's portrayal continues to bloom as her career progresses, she may follow in the steps of Leontyne Price as one of the great Aidas of our time." Her experience includes other leading roles at San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Arena di Verona-Italy, Royal Festival Hall-London, Hall-London, and Theater des Westens-Berlin. Westens-Berlin. Richard di Renzi portrays Radames. The young tenor, winner of the Enrico Caruso Competition in 1992, will sing the role of Radames this November at L'Opera de Montreal, and has mastectomy and lumpectomy women. Already concerned with how women have been "handled" throughout history, I became increasingly disturbed as I learned more about the breast cancer scene. My doctor suggested plastic surgery even as the implant scandal was being publicized. I asked, "If I'm going to bother trying to replace a missing breast, why not install something useful, like a camera or a Walkman? Actually, I thought I could now go topless on that side." After a mastectomy, many women look into the mirror and they imagine that their self-image has dissolved, that their self-image has dissolved, and that their potential as a sex symbol is gone forever, anguish and despair often get in the way of the hidden truth: they cripple us and take us away from the knowledge that can bring forth a more sensual and spiritual message about transcending ego, about transcending vanity, about leaving that superficial attachment Zen Society American Zen Society founding teacher Scott Morrison, author of Open and Innocent: The Gentle, Passionate Art of Not-Knowing, Not-Knowing, will be leading a mindfulness meditation intensive at Unity of Salt Lake, 7136 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City on Saturday, Oct 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. entitled "Enlightenment is Unconditional Intimacy with This Moment." She is internationally renowned for her portrayal of Carmen at the opera companies of Houston, San Diego, Miami, Auckland and Mexico City. Amonasro, King of Ethiopia, will be sung by baritone Robert Honeysucker, a veteran of numerous feature roles at Boston Lyric Opera, Connecticut Opera, and concert appearances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops and Pittsburgh Symphony. Ashley Howard Wilkinson (Utah Opera's The Magic Flute, 1993), returns to Salt Lake City as the High Priest of Egypt, Ramfis. Wilkinson's previous engagements have included Los Angeles Opera, Washington Opera, Berlin Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. He is a graduate of the Met's Young Artists Development Program. The King of Egypt will be portrayed by George Reid, who has also appeared with New Orleans Opera, Baltimore Opera, Nice Opera-France, and New York City Opera National Company. John Keenan will direct the Utah Symphony tor Aida. Keenan made his Met-conducting debut in 1990 at the age of 26, and has since gone on to an international career that encompasses the opera companies of La Scala, Bayreuth, to bodily image and sexuality behind. Two years after my surgery, when I had realized I had missed my funeral and was feeling better than ever thanks to my new macrobiotic diet, I decided I was ready to return to making self portraits. But the challenge was enormous: how could I, "minus one," show my asymmetrical body and bring it to the level of my earlier work without provoking pity? When men come home from the war bandaged and broken they are considered symbols of strength, even sexy. Could I actually show a mastectomy woman who looks beautiful, who has pride and dignity? A picture evoking not self-indulgence, self-indulgence, but power and strength? I hope that my work will inspire others to become active in revolutionizing the medical professions. I have seen my operation on film. I say, no one should ever have to go through this. I hope that in my lifetime, teacher to lead meditation but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
