FIliST LOAD OF PIPE With Utah Valley's mountains as a scenic backdrop, the first load of 40-inch pipe moves out of U.S. Steel's Geneva Works for its Louisiana destination destina-tion and the start of what will be the country's largest crude oil pipeline reaching from the Gulf Coatjt to Central Illinois. Production of this size pipe was a real competitive achievement achieve-ment for Utah steelmakers. A major part of the 630 mile line will be constructed with Utah steel from Geneva Works. Production of the 40-inch pipe marks a significant achievement ach-ievement for the Geneva mill and its employees. Furthermore, the Utah Valley mill is the reaching from the lower Louisiana Louis-iana Gulf Coast region to Central Cen-tral Illinois. Rail shipments of the 40-inch pipe from the Geneva mill already al-ready have started the first of the pipe going to a Louis- U. S. Steel's Geneva Works pipe mills division here is making mak-ing 40-inch pipe for what will be the largest crude oil pipeline pipe-line in the United States. Utah-made pipe will form the major part of the 630 mile line 'I only one of the U. S. Steel Corporation's pipe mills currently cur-rently capable of producing pipe of this diameter. Geneva Works General Superintendent Su-perintendent Raymond W. Sundquist said, "This marks a major accomplishment of Errors Er-rors Zero attitude and team- work." Mr. Sundquist said that in the pipe mills a complete conversion con-version of the large diameter mill was necessary and that throughout the pipe mills all facilities had to be changed to accomodate the 40-inch pipe. "A major part of this work had to be done in a two-week period to meet the required shipping schedule," Mr. Sundquist Sund-quist said. "The pipe mills crews have met the demands we made of them, and we are meeting the shipping schedules required by the customer." The pipe is made with plate 131 inches wide. It is expected that Geneva Works will be producing the 40-inch pipe until the first of the year to fulfill its part of the project. |
