Show Redinen, Flyers split contests after protest in the fifth, and it looked as thougn Cedar would easily take the game. Dixie, however, was not about to give up that easily. In .the top of the sixth they put together a rally which eventually even-tually gave them four runs off of Jones and relief pitcher Brett Staple. Finally Kevin Garrett, the winnnig pitcher in game one, was brought i to finish up the game and pick up a save wnue Jones g got the CHS win. In the top of the seventh, trailing by just one run, Dixie again put together a challenging threat. With runners on first and second, Cole Lay stepped to the plate and hit the ball to right field, but Jim Park was ready and waiting. Park barely snagged the ball as he ran and nearly fell across the grass. Then he threw the ball to the first baseman who tagged out the Dixie baserunner on his way back to first base to end the Dixie threat. By LYNETTE SAWYER Record Reporter CEDAR CITY - With a lot more at stake then just a ballgame, Cedar High baseballers hosted their Southern rivals, Dixie High, in a double-header last week, and the Redmen thought they had won both games by scores of 6-2 6-2 and 54 Game one, however, was protested by Dixie when one of their players was called out due to a misunderstanding concerning the league's re-entry rule. Innings six and seven were replayed in Cedar City on Tuesday and Dixie eventually won the game 8-7. Cedar's first play of the Tuesday's two-inning game was to pick off Hud Rynio from second base. Rynio represented the third out, as the game began with two outs in the sixth inning. Next the Redmen stepped to the plate and made the score 7-2 before the sixth inning w was over. But in the top of the seventh, the ever-rallying ever-rallying Flyers came up with enough runs to make the game 7-6, Cedar, with no outs. At this point pitcher Kevin Garrett was pulled out of the game and K!C. Jones was called upon. Jones achieved three outs after five batters, but n not before Dixie's Rynio could slam out a two-run homer to put Dixie up 8-7. Cedar's first three batters in the seventh inning were downed by the psyched-up Dixie players, and the game ended on the 8-7 score. The loss means that Cedar will travel north for the first round of state playoffs today. Starring in the original game was senior pitcher Kevin Garrett. Garrett went the distance on the mound for the Redmen, and he also gave the Redmen three runs when he belted the first pitch Dixie's Craig Burgess threw him over the right-centerfield wall in the bottom of the first inning for a three-run homer. The Redmen added three more runs in the sixth inning to reach their final tally of six when Jim Park and Ben Whitney belted a triple and a double respectively. Garrett also picked up a double in addition to his homer. Those fine efforts were all negated with Tuesday's two-inning conclusion. In the second game last week, Dixie attempted to down the Redmen by attacking early. In the fourth inning, the Flyers' Jeff Turek blasted a homer off pitcher K.C. Jones. But the run seemed to trigger Cedar into action and in the bottom of the fourth inning, Craig Soderquist reached first base on a single and then reached second because of sloppy play on the part of the Flyers. Jim Park, who performed excellently both in the field and at the plate, then hit the ball far enough up the middle to score Soderquist from second. Cedar then went ahead when Ben Whitney singled to score Park. The Redmen added three more runs |
