"One of Mr. Eccles' ancestors, John Stoddard, was among Cedar City's very first pioneer residents." Active in banking and finance since 1959, Eccles was elected in January 1982 to the position of chairman of the board and chief executive officer of-ficer of both the First Security Corporation and First Security Company. Those titles are in addition ad-dition to president and chief operating officer, positions he held prior to the January election. The Columbia Graduate School of Business granted Eccles a Master's Degree in Banking and Finance in 1959. He graduated from the University of Utah in Banking and Finance in 1956. From 1956 to 1958, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. Eccles began his banking career with the First National City Bank in New York City in 1959. Shortly thereafter he joined First Security Bank of Utah. In 1970, he was named executive vice president of the First Security Company and in 1975 was selected president of both First Security Corporation and First Security Company. With assets of four billion dollars, the First Security Corporation is ranked 60th among America's largest banks and has branch banks throughout Utah and Idaho. In addition to his positions with First Security, Eccles serves on the board of directors for 11 corporations and advisory boards including in-cluding Union Pacific, ZCMI, Ballet West and the Utah Symphony. He has been an active fund raiser for the Ballet and the Symphony as well as his alma mater and was the chairman for the Sugarhouse Boy's Club Building Fund campaign , in 1978-79. He is also , president of the First Security Foundation which has been a consistent con-sistent donor to the SUSC scholarship fund. Eccles, 48, is married to the former Cleone Peterson.
