Show Individuals must be honest to stop waste and kigk taxes Government programs just the term, brings: varied responses from, nearly everyone Some scoff, some curse and some rejoice, defending their existence Yet, as with most things,, everybody is right to some extent. Sometimes government programs do deserve scoffing and cursing, and others times they do show cause for happiness, something good being, done. Afterall, the original idea behind government and government programs, years ago, was entirely noble.. The feeling of some today is that the idea is still noble, but almost everyobdy admits: that the programs have been andare being abused. Such is: certainly the case- of. the Utah. Home Energy Assistance Target Program. The initial idea was noble. The program now could be noble, probably is in most cases. But it is being abused.. College students,, and others: undeserving;, are ,. taking advantage: of.' some easy, money. Now; to clear theurlet us add that we don't have any' objection ' to" those deserving receiving the assistance money. The: program, is good when, applied to the unemployed, the senior citizens an fixed incomes and so on. But it is probably not good when those who are living comfortably get a little money that will never be spent on heat bills, but will he used for frills. It is probably not good when those who choose to be in. college rather than employed take and use the money, even when it was not originally intended far them.. And it's not just college students and it's not just, the HEAT program. We are all screaming that we want tax; cuts,, that we want fewer government spending programs, that we want welfare reforms,, but how. many of us are part of the problem, rather than part. of. the solution? If the answer is only a few,, then that is a few too many; In. this day of tight money, of screams for revision; anyone taking advantage of an otherwise good thing' is too many; No matter how carefully the laws and regulations concerning such programs are written there will alsways be loopholes for those who look; for them. No matter how. well-intended a program was designed to , be,, there will always be some uro-deserving, uro-deserving, who can legally qualify: Thus, it is up to the individual monitor himself. The government cannot monitor the programs.. Ill we truly want, to stop waste and-higher taxes; there are a number of . changes that should be made;, changes that would have more of an affect than whatwecan do individually,, but is that any reason to. not start with: what we can dof' We think, not |
