Show Majoritybelieves everyone deserves a goodlif e deserve a good life, but we are now insisting that the good life never came easy, or free. Sincerely, Bruce Lee week. We, the young, are tired of paying a huge chunk out of our checks to go to a social security system which, looks to us like it may be bankrupt long before we- collect, anything back. W, the workers of the country, are tired of welfare fraud, government, in? tervention and. regulations,, bureaucrats on fancy salaries, a spendthrift spend-thrift congress and high taxes. We've all heard examples, but let me add a few more. And, Mr. President, these are not things that I have heard across- the fence; these are things L President Ronald Reagan White House Washington, D.C 20O0O, Dear Mr: President:; I have used this space to write to you before, but L feel. that, certainly the space could, be well, worth another letter, especially- considering the treatment the major liberal media has given you of late. I'll admit I'm not one to jump on the bandwagon and lend my support to politicians or public officials all the timet In fad, L am. like a. lot; ot other southern Utahns who don't quite trust the government after the nuclear testing of the 1950s and the attempt at. placing MX. here. just, recently,. . Yet, I da think the liberal media, is being unfair to your economic recovery, program. I don't think it reflects the views of middle America. Columns and. editorials in small newspapers across the country, I think, more accurately reflect, the mood and opinions of the people And this time, Mr. President, L think, the people generally agree with you, at. least much more than the national media lets on. And here's why. . We are getting , tired of our friends and neighbors who are receiving, government assistance for doing nothing and livingas well as those of us who are working, 40 to 50 hours per. down a job because it only paid $5" per hour:? Instead he continued to receive unemployment compensation, while the rest of us worked, some for less than $Sper hour.. Or, on a state level, what: about the Utah Home Energy Assistance Target Program, which has allowed college students, many of them supported by their parents, to receive twice-a-year checks to supposedly help them pay their heat bills? T know one of these students who is planning on buying a camera with the money. Also, a person with three kids such as myself could qualify for the assistance while making up to $20,000 per yean Is that really equitable?' We know it's-not,. Mr. Reagan, and.I. and others appreciate your attempts to bring such things under control; Many of the government workers I have talked to have said that examples such as those above are only a few who cheat, while the majority really need the assistance. But we have heard and experienced: too many examples to believe- that. There- are definite problems with the social programs of our country and our states; I am glad to see that you are trying to do something about this-. Many of us are supporting, your efforts, contrary ta what, one sees on the television news every evening The majority of us believe that we all By Bnuce Lee have experienced and know for a fact.. What.about the young divorce who is accepting welfare payments, food stamps, free day-care for her children,, a free college education, and. govern-ment govern-ment assistance on a .house loan, as well, as alimony and child.support, and who. has a. new. car. and who. cair. afford, luxuriess such as cable- television, something the rest of us in the neighr borhood put of f because wecan't afford it? Is that, really, equitable? What, about, the friend wha turned |
