Show Frosh achieve win; sophs lose contest CEDAR CITY - Cedar High's sophomore team got a touchdown from their offense, and one from their defense, but the 14 points weren't enough to hold the sophomores from Carbon and the Dinos more than doubled Cedar's score. The Redmen team led by a 14-0 score before Carbon had achieved a single point. Derek Bonne scored one touchdown touch-down on a short offensive run and Gary Mackelprang made an alert defensive play by picking up a loose ball and running it in for the second touchdown : of the game. The young Reds were mentally unprepared for the game and did not play well after the half. Carbon racked up over thirty points to completely com-pletely outshow Cedar High. Said one spectator, "They seemed to have convinced themselves that they had lost it before they even got of the bus." The sophomores will play their final game next Thursday when they travel to Richfield. In other underclassmen action at Cedar High this past week, the freshmen football squad hosted a team from Lincoln County. It was Lincoln's Junior Varsity team and contained a lot of players bigger and older than Cedar's. "We were down most of the game," said Coach Wayne Decker. "But we came up with the big plays when we needed them." Cedar won the contest 26-16. David Hart ran the ball for one touchdown. Mike Goulding's interception put the ball on the 20-yard line and Cedar was able to score from there. Boyd Esplin scored on a return and also on a 50-yard 50-yard run from the line of scrimmage to score two of the four Redmen touchdowns. Esplin was named the contest's most valuable player by Coach Decker. The freshmen will also close-out thier season next week as they too will travel to Richfield to play. |
