Show Carbon Dinos thumped by mighty Redmen, 1 7-0 CEDAR CITY The Reds are on the rise, and, if they find themselves much higher, they will have to don oxygen masks and prepare for a Utah State 3-A title contest. The Cedar High School football team continued their winning ways last week as they thumped a solid Carbon squad 17-0. Since being drubbed in their opener by a tough American Fork team, the Redmen from Cedar High have been steadily climbing upward in their quest for finer football and a Region 8 championship. They have now clinched at least a tie for that title and only Springville stands between CHS and an undisputed region championship. The two teams will square-off tomorrow night in Springville. The Cardiac Kids have only occasionally used their heart-stopping heart-stopping antics this season as they've piled up six consecutive wins, and their play last week against Carbon was no exception. "We pretty well dominated them," explained Dave Jenson, head mentor for the Redmen. "I thought we played a good ballgame. The thing I felt really good about was our line play, both offensively of-fensively and defensively." Cedar linemen once again controlled the line of scrimmage and, as they say, that's where games are won and lost. Jenson applauded the play of his entire defensive unit. "Overall our team defense was good," said Jensen. "That's the lowest total they've had all year. We didn't let them get deep on us." The Redmen rushed very well against Carbon, with Ben Whitney turning in a superb effort and netting 130 yards. Kevin Garrett added 56; Troy Nielson, 39; and Don Adams, 29. Jenson praised the blocking of fullback Adams. "He's a great blocker, probably the best I've had." Jenson was also pleased with Garrett's punting and the excellent punt coverage, especially by Danny Harris. The Redmen first scored against Carbon with :33 left in the first quarter. Whitney ran it in and Andy Parry added the point after. That was the only scoring in the first half. Cedar took the second half kick and Nielson returned it to the CHS 43. Following a nine-play drive and PAT it was 14-0. The TD came on a Nielson sweep around the left side. Parry added a 27-yard fieldgoal with about 6:30 left and the 17-0 final resulted. Speedy Troy Nielson sprints around the right side and trys to elude the grips of a Carbon tackier. The junior rushed for one touchdown and the Reds thumped the Dinos 17-0 last week. |
