Show City Council votes not to rezone Fir and Main CEDAR CITY The Cedar City Council voted last week to leave the corner of Fir and Main streets zoned as highway service. The decision was reached during a public hearing Thursday at the regular Council meeting. The City Council resolved not to rezone, but to send it back to the Planning Commission for further discussion. This decision came after a lengthy inquiry of possible hazards if the lot were rezoned as commerical land. Real estate developer Kent Staply encouraged the Council to seriously think about tne rezoning, indicating possibilities of having a car wash, a Foto-mat, or "possibly an eye clinic on that piece of land." Expressing concern, Councilman Harold Shirley noted that if the zoning were changed to CCl or commercial, a building could be constructed right up to the property line creating a hazard for motorists entering Main from Fir Street. "If we leave it the way it is, zoned as highway service, then any building put on the lot would have to be built back 20 feet, and I personally think that's a heck of a lot safer." see COUNCIL on page A4 Council continued from page Al In another ' matter Mayor Jack Sawyers indicated that the the City Council could use funds to help small businesses obtain- loans. "We're in a situation where we've got to do "something for the small businessman, and I think we can lend to them," commented Sawyers on an industrial development group in Salt Lake City. "There's not one agency I know of that can fund the small businesses except this one." "The 503 fund from the SBA (Small Business Administration) provides 40 percent, but that still leaves 60 percent of the loan to come from a bank. My suggestion is to look at a state or an already existing organization," Swayers-added.. ": - ;. iv: w. In other business Several public hearings were called for.
