Chris Whetton Two basketball players from Southern Utah State College have been nominated for recognition of their combined basketball and academic abilities. Russell Hafen, a 6-6 senior forward on the SUSC men's team, and Chris Whetton, a 5-6 Russ Hafen must be a regular on his or her team and must have a "B" average or better for either the past year or for a college career. Hafen and Whetton were both nominated for balloting for the college division teams. A university division team is also chosen for both men and women. CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of . America) sponsors the competition to recognize worthy scholar-athletes. Hafen is majoring in business administration where he carries a 3.37 grade point average for over three years of study (4.0 equals A). His current basketball statistics sta-tistics show him leading the T-Bird team in rebounds with an average of 7.2 per game. He also scores an average of 10.4 points per game, third best on the team, while shooting with 54.2 percent accuracy from the field. Whetton has a grade point average of 3.82 for her college career. She is majoring in physical education and minoring in sociology. She averages 10.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. She earned all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors this fall in volleyball. Last spring, she was a qualifier for the NAIA district track meet as a long jumper. "It is a distinct honor to be nominated for consideration con-sideration as an academic all-American," Steve Lunt, SUSC athletic director, says.
