Copyright 1981 The Iron County Record " ' ' This article is the first in a three-part series examining the cost of living in Iron I County. Today's story looks at Iron County I ', gas prices and compares them with prices I three months ago. II By BRUCE LEE I Record Assoc. Editor I Nobody would argue that gasoline prices " ' are UP rom wna' were tnree months v; I ; ago. In fact, nobody would argue that they ' ' i I have gone up quite substantially, and the ' 1 most recent survey of Iron County gas i SI prices bears that out. , ! i Gas prices in Cedar City from the end of 1 , November 1980 to the end of February 1981 ; i 1 v j A went up an average of 12.4 cents. That i" I ' ' ' ' translates into approximately 10 percent for I f v, ' I ' , , i the quarter, a whopping annual rate of 40 ShI percent -w . In a survey of self-service gas at all Cedar I I City stations taken Feb. 26, the average II price for regular gas was $1.32 per gallon. f.Plpr ft The average price for unleaded was $1.37.3 Diesel fuel prices were added to the survey this quarter because of the increasing in-creasing number of stations now pumping such. The survey included all 36 stations in Iron County with self-service pumps. At stations outside of Cedar City but within Iron County those prices were slightly higher in most cases. Regular prices in the county were $1.34.9, 2.9 cents higher than prices in Cedar City. Prices l or unleaded gas were $1.38.8, or only 1.5 cents higher. Prices for premium were $1.44.4 in the county, 2.5 cents higher than in Cedar City. However, prices for diesel fuel, used extensively by truckers and farmers in the county, were much lower outside of Cedar City. A gallon of diesel fuel in Cedar City was priced at $1.20.2; while the same in the county was priced only $1.12.9, a difference of 7.3 cents per gallon. County-wide (including all gas stations in the county and its cities and towns) the average price for a gallon of regular was $1.32.9; unleaded was $1.37.7; premium was $1.42.2; and diesel was $1.17.8. One interesting figure noted by the survey was the difference between independent stations' prices and prices at "major" dealers. Again, the prices at "major" stations was higher, but the difference was not as much as it was three months ago. For example, in November of 1980 a gallon of regular gas at an independent gas station cost $1.16.7. At a "major" station it cost $1.21.1. The difference was 4.4 cents between the two types of stations. In February of 1981 that difference was only 2.5 cents. The difference between the two types of dealers of unleaded gas was 4.4 cents in November. Now it is only 3.3 cents. Premium was 7.6 cents three months ago and only 6 cents now. Although the prices of gas are going up, a person can still save a little money by shopping around, but very little. If a Cedar City resident used 50 gallons of unleaded gas'in a month, he could save only $6.60 by buying gas from the least expensive station in town instead of the most expensive. Next week the Iron County Record will look at grocery prices in Cedar City and what has happened to them during the past three months.
