Show Lady Reds down Lions; clinch state playoff spot PAYSON Packing a double punch almost always produces a victory. vic-tory. Take the Cedar High girls' basketball team, for instance. Both Kathy Nelson and Tori Brinkerhoff scored 16 points last week agsinst Payson, and it was more than enough, as the Lady Reds won 57-42. Judging from the first quarter, it seemed this would be a pretty even match, with the Lions even getting a one-bucket lead at the quarter. The third and fourth quarters were closely contested as well, as the I Lady Reds claimed only a four-point advantage between the two periods. The story of this game was written in the second quarter. In those eight minutes, the Lady Reds were able to gain momentum and ended up running away ' with the game. The Cedar team outscored their hosts 21-8 in thesecond quarter. Part of Cedar's success in the second quarter was due to their balanced scoring. All five starters scored at least a hoop. Another big factor in the Reds' big, 15-point victory was their ability to stay out of foul trouble, a problem in recent games. No Cedar player, in fact, finished with more than three fouls. Besides Brinkerhoff's and Nelson's 16, Kellie Evans broke into doubles with 12. Only Payson's Jill Holden, with 17, scored more than 10. The win was a big one, in that it assured the Lady Reds a spot in the upcoming state playoffs, as well as the regular-season regular-season championship of Region Six's Southern Division. A match Tuesday with Carbon will finish the CHS team's regular season. |
