Show Time to oppose MXlplit Basing The accepted opinion of the majority of people we talk to lately is that the MX missile system will be built in the valleys of the Great Basin. So the question to us seems to now be one of how citizens of the area can best take advantage of the massive project. We further submit that one of the best ways to realize those benefits is to fight strongly against the proposed split basing of the project. If the split basing alternative should be accepted by the Air Force, there will be no base in or near Iron County. Residents will reap only the negative impacts of shelters being built in the deserts, of water and land being taken from local ranchers. There will be very few personnel moving into the area permanently, people who will give our lagging economy a needed boost. Instead, all that will be left is the scars. On the other hand, if the entire system is built in Utah and Nevada, businesses and industry in Iron County will reap the much needed increase in-crease in consumers. Certainly there will be some impacts in the communities which we may not all desire; but we feel strongly that the good the increased economy would certainly outweigh whatever bad there may be. As much as we all may wish this area to remain a pristine, rural island, if we are to prosper, if future generations are to prosper, or even remain in the community, we must look to future development; and MX may be the shot in the arm needed to begin that future. |
