Show World Renowned BYU A Cappella Choir in Concert The Cedar West Stake Quorum of Seventy will sponsor the Brigham Young University A Cappella Choir in concert, Friday, Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the fourth ward chapel located at 256 South 900 West. This exciting evening of vocal music is designated as a" felloshipping opportunity and a tribute to the Sesquisentennial celebration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Tickets will be five dollars a couple or one dollar for high school and college students. They may be purchased at the door or by phoning 586-4093, or by contacting Floyd Rigby, or by contacting any Cedar West Stake Seventy. the choirs concert in Cedar City will precede their tour to Warsaw, Poland , where they will participate in ; the International Society of Music Educators Convention. Con-vention. Following this they will journey to Spittal, Austria where they will be the only United States Choir to compete in a world music competition. They will then tour Poland, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The 64- member choir has a varied repertoire ranging from Renaissance to modern numbers. As well as classical pieces, the singers perform spirituals, folk songs and hymn arrangements. Each piece is at the Spittal, Austria, Festival the same month. In addition the A Cappella Choir has been asked to sing once again at the national convention of the Music Educators National Conference Con-ference in April. Other honors for the choir include command performances per-formances for Queen Sophia in Spain and the American Ambassador in Paris; representing the United States in the Independence Day celebration in Bergin, Norway; initiating the Monaco Festival in 1976 under the chairmanship of Princess Grace; and performing per-forming for the Plymouth, England, 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. sung in its original language, and most numbers are' performed without accompaniment. ac-companiment. Under the direction of Dr. Ralph Woodward, chairman of choral music at Brigham Young University, the A Cappella Choir has gained an international reputation as one of America's finest choral groups. In 1968, as a climax to its first European tour, the choir won first prize at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. In 1970 it was named "Best International Choir" at the Linz, Austria Festival. The Choir also has the distinction of being the first .non-Catholic religious group to sing in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The A Cappella Choir has toured Europe five times since 1968. In 1978, the choir made its sixth tour abroad, participating in Israel's 30th anniversary celebration. The group presented concerts con-certs in cities and kibbutzim throughout Israel and received enthusiastic reviews. Hanoh Ron, one of Israel's best known music'' critics, praised the singers for their ability to "express an inner musical message, full of genuine sincerity." "Renaissance compositions com-positions sparkled, the Bach motet moved by its expression ex-pression and religious parts which were performed in the course of the evening gave the impression that the whole choir sang on its knees," Ron said. Members of the A Cappella Cap-pella Choir are chosen from hundreds of BYU students who audition each year. Scholastic as well as musical ability is considered, and individual strength is also required. The choir performs per-forms with men and women mixed, sopranos standing next to basses and altos next to tenors. "Each member of the choir is an accomplished soloist in his own right," Woodward said. The numerous requests the choir has received further attest to its hjgh quality. After its tour of Israel, the choir was invited to do a concert tour with the National Kibbutz Orchestra. The group has also received invitations to perform at the International Society of Music Educators in Warsaw, Poland, in July 1980, and to represent the United States |
