Kerecman is an honor student at SUSC, well known for his associaiton with the college forensics program. He has won several first place awards this year and represented SUSC last year in national tournaments in debate and individual events, taking fourth place nationally in extemporaneous ex-temporaneous speaking. He is a member of the SUSC communications club and Phi Beta Lambda, a national business organization. Kerecman won first place at the state PBL tournament in extemporaneous ex-temporaneous speaking competition. The Sterling Scholar 'in Speech and Drama graduated from Orem High School in 1978 where he was a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Orem High Legislative Council, and was president of the National Forensics League. Southern Utah State College sophomore Chris Kerecman has been selected as a semifinalist in nationwide competition for one of 53 Harry S. Truman Scholarships. Kerecman, a political science and communications major who plans to attend law school after graduation from SUSC, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kerecman, Kerec-man, 175 East 350 North Orem. "The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation has been established, by Congress, as a living memorial to the 33rd President of the United States," Rodney D. Decker, SUSC faculty representative for the foundation, said "The awards are given students who have long range career interests in government, and who display outstanding potential for leadership in government service " Each scholarship covers tuition, fees, books, and room and board, to a maximum of $5,000 per year, and is available to the recipient for four years. Decker indicates that one scholarship is awarded each year to a resident nominee in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and considered as a single entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. the award each year. Since the scholarship program began in 1977, SUSC has had two semifinalists in national competition, Decker said. Jeff Snedeger, now a senior political science major at SUSC, was a semifinalist in 1979. As SUSC's nominee for 1980, Kerecman completed a series of nomination procedures which included writing an essay about a public policy issue.
