Show Festival Filming slated on SUSC Campus With the recent visit of a producer from the British Broadcasting Company, preliminary plans are complete for filming segments of the BBC History of the Theatre television series in the Adams Memorial Shakespearean Theatre during the summer of 1981. Mr. Paul Wineman, a producer for the 13-segment series, was looking for an authentically-styled Tudor . theatre building which would most nearly reflect the theatre conditions . in which Shakespearean plays were first prsented. (The Royal Shakespearean Theatre at Stratford is modern in design.) Upon the advice of John Andrews, Editor of the Folger Library's SHAKESPEAREAN QUARTERLY, Wineman flew to Cedar City to look over the Utah Shakespearean Festival theatre building and facilities, and was impressed with their suitability for his needs. It was thought originally that only short segments of HAMLET would be filmed for the series, but after discussion and planning, Wineman indicated he would return to London with the recommendation that excerpts ex-cerpts from several of the plays be filmed at the Utah Shakespearean Festival location. ..an evening of "Major Moments from Shakespeare." It is anticipated that a core of English actors and directors including Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Sir Richard Johnson and Sir John Gilguid will be brought to Cedar City, and the evening of filming will be integrated into the 1981 Festival season as a special performance, providing the live audience requested by Mr. Wineman. It is planned that tickets purchased for the special performance per-formance will benefit the Utah Shakespearean Festival Endowment Fund. Paul Wineman is known to American audiences for his productions with the BBC of THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET, POLDARK; I CLAUDIUS and the Lord Peter Whimsey series on Masterpiece Theatre. |
