Show Public Meeting called on MX The state will sponsor a town meeting in Cedar City on Sat., Feb. 23 from 6-9 p.m. in the high school auditorium to discuss the proposed MX missile deployment. The meeting will be conducted by Mayor Jack S. Sawyers. Governor Scott M. Matheson announced an-nounced the four meetings scheduled for Utah and Juab counties, Millard County Beaver County and Iron and Washington counties-the areas which would potentially be impacted by the development. "The purpose of these meetings," the Governor said, "is to further explore the attitudes of Utahns about possible MX deployment in our State and the positive and negative impacts that deployment will have." Governor Matheson explained "this major public policy issue must-, receive maximum participation from our citizens, and these town meetings will be another part of that process. I will be in attendance at each one so that I can personally hear what Utahns think about MX and its potential deployment in our State." The Governor has stressed the importance of an informal and open exchange between participants. ' To accomplish this goal, a "town meeting" concept rather than a "public hearing" concept has been selected as the best format for the meetings. However, because of the number of persons who wish to participate, each speaker will be limited to five minutes. Those who speak will be asked to line up at an audience microphone and await their turns. If there is additional time available at ' the end of the meeting, then those who have already spoken will be invited to do so again. Written comments will be welcome, but not required. |
