Show 'Giant Joshua' Reviewed Sun. By Mrs. H. C. Thomas By MABEL JARVTS Standing room was at a premium in the County Library Sunday evening when Mrs. H. C. Thomas " reviewed "Giant Joshua", the y, ' novel of Dixie pioneering by st Maurine Whipple. ie Since a rather thorough survey w of the background of the book, ;ii the sources of material and the in author's style had been given at a previous book review by Pres. m Glenn E. Snow, Mrs. Thomas de-y, de-y, voted the hour Sunday evening to is the story itself, and did a most a' excellent and thorough handling li (Continued on page eight) d Sunday Book Review (Continued from front page) of the book, as far as one hour would permit, holding her audience audi-ence on their toes during the entire en-tire evening. Giving her time in this manner to the contents, Mrs. Thomas was able to read many exerpts from all parts of the book as she proceeded, pro-ceeded, tying these together with the general thread of the story in a pleasing and artistic style, and leaving her audience with a desire to read the volume for themselves and to gather information infor-mation of their own on the tremendously tre-mendously interesting and active years of Dixie's Pioneers. To many, this review offered a new light on the years of Pioneering in this section and gave them a positive reaction to the accomplishments accom-plishments of those who came here to grow cane and cotton during dur-ing the Civil War period, and to convert some of the most undesirable unde-sirable land of the states, then a territory, into a place of cultural beauty through the architecture, the plant life and the educational facilities. Many who heard the review could aptly put their fingers on the events and the families connected, con-nected, and in her review Mrs. Thomas showed the high art with which the author has combined the events into a very readable story, fictionalized from a rich background. Much appreciation is expressed to Mrs. Thomas for her excellent review. |
