About 10:30 last Friday night a call came to Sheriff Brooks from the Petty Motor Co., Cedar City, saying that a Hupmobile sedan had been stolen by two men and that it was thought they were beaded this way. The Sheriff and Deputy Dune Mc-Arthur Mc-Arthur stationed themselves on the streets to watch for the car. When told ' that the license number carried by the car compared com-pared with the one. on the car stolen in Cedar, Lyons started for St. George in pursuit. However . the . pair had turned off the main highway and Lyons did not find them. After reaching St. George, Lyons was joined by Sheriff Brooks and Deputy McArthur and they returned in the direction of Washington. They found the car in that town but no trace of the men. After a thorough search they returned to St. George and caught the pair on the Dixie hotel corner. They were locked up for the night and turned over to the Iron county sheriff Saturday, and taken to Cedar City. That night they escaped by prying the lock off the cell door and found at Iron Springs station Sunday morning. They ignored the sheriffs' command to stop and a shot was fired in the air. At the report both men dropped but when the officer offi-cer hurried to them he found them unharmed. They were taken back to the Cedar jail where they are held awaiting trial. The car itself was not damaged, although al-though one tire was ruined and another anoth-er bruised. These tires were flat when the car was found and showed evidence evid-ence that the men had run the car for some distance on the flats. |
