Show Climber buried in avalanche PARADISE, Wash. - Rescuers found no sign of life at the scene where 11 mountain climbers were buried under an avalanche of ice on Mount Rainier early Sunday, in what seems the worst accident in the history of Washington's highwest mountain, officials said. An ice wall tore off a glacier and crashed down on the climbers, leaving a swath of ice rubble 100 yards wide and 70 feet deep, said National Park Service Ranger Larry Henderson. Army helicopter rescue crews at Fort Lewis near Tacoma were alerted but could not fly up the mountain immediately im-mediately because of bad weather which restricted visibility to 50 to 100 feet. Because of blizzard conditions rescuers were also unable to reach the cite Monday. |
