DEE MCKINNON, Ralph Warby and Jay Carter study a 12th century castle that was prepared for the District History Fair to be held May 7. History teachers to sponsor fair Students and teachers in the area schools are preparing projects for the district History Fair to be held Thursday, Thur-sday, May 7 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Vernal Junior High. Sponsorship of the fair began when social studies teachers met last January and decided to have a spring exhibition to show the work students have done during the year. The fair will show the projects, models and other work being done in the elementary, junior high and high school history classes. Student work will be judged in each school and the best work will go to a district show in May. The district show will be judged by grades and a trophy will be awarded to the outstanding entry from each grade. Other History Fairs are being sponsored in the state by the Utah Endowment for the Humanities and Utah State University, but the Uintah District fair is independently sponsored by the district and the social studies teachers. "We are excited for the opportunity to let the community see what our kids are doing," said JoAnn Gilbert, Uintah High School history teacher. "Over the years students have prepared excellent reports and projects, but no one ever gets to see them. Now we get a chance to let the whole town see what is going on in social studies classes." The History Fair committee consists of Lowell Long, Naples; Dan Olsen, Central; JoAnn Hardy, Discovery; Doris Morrill, Maeser; Peggy Ence and Menlyn Uresk, Todd; Guy Coleman, West; Bob Chandler, Vernal Junior High; JoAnn Gilbert, Uintah High School; and Len Gotlredson, administrator. |
