A member of the Weekend Warriors attempted at-tempted to pass the ball between O.J. Trujillo's legs and the Weekend Warriors' War-riors' eager kept on going toward the hoop, but the ball stopped and didn't travel between Trujillo's legs. Trujillo nabbed the basketball, dribbled down the court and passed the ball to Brad Denver for an easy layup for the Ute Tribe I team. Fort Washakie hit two field goals in less than 21 seconds in the first half of their battle for fifth place with Nez Perce of Idaho. The score was tied at 32-32 with 21 seconds left in the game. Fort Washakie scored a field goal and then Nez Perce took the ball out of bounds. The Nez Perce eager couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to so he gave it to the closest person next to him who turned out to be a Fort Washakie hoopster. The shocked swisher soared to the hoop for a two pointer. Nez Perce took the ball out of bounds again and fired a long pass down the court. However, disaster struck again as the ball was intercepted and a Ford Washakie eager put in a shot at the buzzer to give his team a 36 to 32 lead. This basketball story had a happy ending en-ding for the Idaho team as they rallied in the second half and won the game by the score of 71 to 62. The coach of Sundance shouted to one of his players in the championship game in the Tournament of Tribal Champions, "Let him have it" and so the basketball player let Mike Carlow have the outside shot from the top of the key and he hit nothing but net for a two pointer. The Sundance coach figured Carlow wouldn't hit on the outside shot, but the Cross Roads eager proved the coach was wrong. The Sundance crew was in control of the basketball and was heading down the court toward its basket, but one member of the team, Gary Manuel stayed in the Cross Roads' court and talked to his coach on the sidelines while the other four hoopsters were trying try-ing to score two points. After the meeting was over he returned to the game. Free throws played a major role in the championship games. Cross Roads of Bates Land, South Dakota, couldn't buy a charity toss in the first game and Sundance of Provo had plenty of free throws but in the second game the teams changed sides in the free throw department. Cross Roads hit 7 out of 15 free throw attempts, but Sundance fired in 18 out of 31 charity tosses and won the first championship game, 80 to 74. Sundance put in 8 out of 14 free throws and Cross Roads connected on 18 out of 33 charity tosses and won the second championship champion-ship game and first place in the tournament. tourna-ment. 71 to62. Free throw marks for the two teams were: first game, Sundance; Dee Baxter, Bax-ter, 4-8; John Beck. 7-12; Vince Rock, 3-4; Manuel, 3-5; Ai Blackbird, 1-2; first game, Cross Roads, Mike Carlow, 2-8; Frank Means. 3-4; Severt Young Bear, 0-1; Melvin High Hawk, 2-2; second se-cond game, Sundance. The Sundance crew spent a great deal of time on the basketball floor Saturday in the Multi-Purpose Building in Fort Duchesne, Saturday. The Sundance Chiefs battled the White Buffalo Council Coun-cil at 3 p.m., Millcreek Bobcats at 6 p.m. and the Cross Roads team at 8:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The Provo team ended its basketball action at 11:45 p.m. The team won three of the four games and played for a total of five hours. The youngsters had a fun time at the games and sometimes they forgot that a basketball contest was going on as they ran on to the court during a shortcut short-cut to the hot dog stand and the game was stopped for a brief moment. |
