Show Save our hospital block Dear Editor: Ten buildings today could not compare com-pare with our old (31 year young) hospital. For its sturdy structure, all of its cement work and its excellent finish work. I have seen Salt Lake hospitals in operation. -I have seen new floors go up, new wings go out. I have seen ladders, paint cans, buckets of soap and water, floor polishes in motion, equipment being replaced and new machines being installed. This is called growth, development and upkeep. All of which our old.hospital so very much deserved. There was no reason for this new building. Nevertheless, with several attempts to make the wall stand up and the community's concern about the design. "Our new hospital" was built. Our hospital administrator has attempted at-tempted to convince the people this is a good working floor plan. And admitted HCA did approve the floor plan but only after the foundation and cement was run. At our "Against the sale of the hospital" meeting held March 24, 1981, we the citizens were informed by hospital employees we have had 3 years to know they , planned to sell our hospital. Three years ago, we did not have this new hospital. Yet H.C.A. had signed a contract to purchase it. We, the taxpayers, the owners of I'intah County Hospital, with all our efforts, tax monies, and donations have built a part of a hospital. A $4,000,000 part that could function as a good working floor plan when it is completed and we have paid again for it. Since July 1980 we have outgrown our new hospital. It's too "Big a business." Yet it was designed with the same amount of beds we have had for 31 years. Did we the people ever in any one years time pay Erland Preece $105,000 to manage our hospital? Hats off to you Erland. You did an excellent job and you were truly underpaid. Does the fact we now have a computer com-puter make this "Big Business?" When computers are installed you are told and taught that computers areas smart as the people who run them. They can only put out what's put in. I feel this new $4,000,000 hospital, the most costly mistake in the history of I'intah County should not be given away. How could we afford to give H.C.A. one city block plus 2 hospitals valued at Sfi.000.OM for $3,500,000? With H.C.A. 's cost increase, we will still pay to finish the new hospital. As citizens of this community, we should be entitled to vote for our non profit organization, designed for our medical needs and our emergency assistance. We have only seen the beginning of this outlandish cost thrust upon us. It should belong to the citizens who have paid for it. Yes, Vernal, Utah has a serious prohlem our County Commission. Deeply concerned, MARVA VOORHIES |
