Golfer wins playoff The Superior Tire-Bridgestone Gold Classic was a 36-hole tournament for most golfers, but for Vance Christiansen, Ogden and Mack Christensen, Salt Lake City, it was a 37-hole 37-hole tournament. Christiansen and Christensen were tied for first place in the championship division of the Vernal tournament at 146 after 36 holes. The golfers split first place ($350) and second place ($300) merchandise prizes, but a playoff was needed for the watch, which goes to the first place winner. Christiansen fired in a 30-foot putt on the number one hole for a par and Christensen missed an eight foot putt on the playoff hole. Christiansen fired rounds of 36-37-73 on Saturday and 39-34-73 on Sunday. Christiansen posted birdies on number six, twice; number seven, number nine, number two and three. Christensen fired rounds of 37-36-73 on Saturday and 37-36-73 on Sunday. Roy Christensen, Provo; Joel Kranz, Brigham City and Mike Richards, Salt Lake City, tied for third place at 147. Doug Swensen of Provo collected sixth place with a score of 148. He had rounds of 39-37-76 and 37-35-72. Vernal's Ed Gudac was only four shots behind the tourney leader Mike Malaska after the first day due to a score of 34-36-70, but Gudac fell from contention when he fired a six over par, 42 on the first nine, Sunday. Gudac delivered a 37 ion the second nine for a score of 79. Gudac placed seventh with a score of 149. Hans Parkinson, Vernal; Jack Ridd, Salt Lake City; Dave Carollo, Green River. Wyo., and Mel Roberts, Salt Lake City, tied for eighth place at 152. Parkinson posted scores of 37-35-72 and : 38-42-80 |
