Golfers from Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and California competed in the Superior Tire-Bridgestone Tire-Bridgestone Golf Classic, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Vernal. Moke WloDosEi cuefis gpfltf sOissds (Sirwini The sun burned the fans and the golfers, but Hidden Valley Country Club assistant pro in Salt Lake City, Mike Malaska, blazed the Dinaland Golf Course with a 6 under par score of 138 to pocket first place in the Superior Tire-Bridgestone Golf Classic in Vernal, Ver-nal, Sunday by five strokes. Malaska fired a 6 under par round of 66 on Saturday and he burned the course with a 5 under par score of 31 on the first nine and had a 1 under par 35 on the second nine. Malaska garnered four birdies in a row on holes number two, three, four and five and added a birdie on number 7 on the first nine. He picked up three birdies on the second nine on number two, three and six. Salt Lake City's Mike Malaska gained gain-ed only three birdies on Sunday, but he acquired the birdies when he needed them. He gained a two for a birdie on the tough number one hole, but he committed com-mitted bogeys on number six and eight. Malaska fired in a birdie on number nine to regain his 6 under par lead. He gained a birdie on number four to go 7 under pay, but nabbed a bogey on number eight to drop back to 6 under par. Malaska netted a par on the final hole to win the tourney with a score of 138. He had scores on Sunday of 36-36-72. Malaska won the amateur crown in the Superior Tire Golf Classic in 1975. "You win a lot more money as a pro. The trophies are nice, but the money is a lot better. I played the number one hole 1 under par for the tournament and that was the key to my first place win. I had a birdie and had two pars on the hole," stated Mike Malaska. "With four holes to go I had a six shot lead. I just coasted and didn't make any mistakes." Malaska garnered the first place price of $1500. Ron VIosich of Green River, Wyo., and Steve LaDonne of Rifle, Colo., tied for second place with scores of 143. VIosich and LaDonne split second and third place price money of $925 and $750. VIosich was only two strokes behind Malaska after the first day of action as he fired scores of 35-33-68. However, he fired a 3 over par 75 on Sunday to finish at 1 under par. He had nine hole scores of 38 and 37 on Sunday. LaDonne posted a score of 69 on Saturday due to nine hole scores of 35 and 34, but fired a two over par score of 74 on Sunday. He had a nine hole score of 39 and 35. The host pro, Jon Mauss of Vernal and the defending champion from Salt Lake City, James Blair, tied for fourth place at 144. Mauss fired a score of 34-35-69, Saturday, but shot a score of 39-36-75, Sunday. Blair posted scores of 36-34:70 and 39-35-74. Mauss and Blair split fourth and fifth place money of $600 and $537. The three golfers split sixth place ($500), seventh place ($432) and eighth place ($350) prize money. Summerhays fired a score of 34-35-69 on Saturday and shot a four under par 39-37-76 on Sunday. Goodliffe posted an 8 over par score of 44 on the first nine, but recovered with under par scores of 33, 35 and 33. He fired a 5 over par score of 77 on Saturday, but posted a 4 under par score of 68 on Sunday. Doug Hart fired scores of 35-37-72 and 39-34-73. Professionals, Don Branca, Salt Lake City and Bob Droz, Price and amateurs, Vance Christiansen, Odgen and Mack Christensen, Salt Lake City, tied for ninth place in the tournament. Branca fired scores of 74 and 72 and Droz had rounds of 72 and 74. Christiansen Chris-tiansen and Christensen fired scores of 73 on Saturday and Sunday. Branca and Droz split ninth and tenth place money of $325 and $287. DeRay Simons of Southern California pocketed 11th place with a score of 147. He delivered rounds of 72 and 75. Milan Swilor, Beaver; Reed McArthur, St. George and Bob Flagler, Provo, tied for 12th place at 148. Swilnc had scores of 71 and 77 and McArthur had scores of 73 and 75. Flagler posted rounds of 76 and 72. Ron Branca, Salt Lake City and Sonny Son-ny Braun, Springville, tied for 15th place at 149. Branca posted scores of 77 and 72 and Braun turned in scores of 73 and 76. Over $18,500 in cash and prizes were awarded at the golf meet. under par score of 138.
