Show Every year sets of Bridgestone tires are given away to the professional and amateur in the closest to the hole contest con-test on number nine at the Dinaland Golf Course in Vernal. Ed Vardon of Green River, Wyoming, figured he had it made and was thinking think-ing how nice his new tires would look on his car because his tee shot landed only two inches from the cup. He figured there was no way that anyone would beat him out for the tires. However, James Blair of Salt Lake City had different ideas as he gained a hole-in-one on the number nine hole and took the tires away from Ed Vardon. Blair teed off with an eight iron and the ball went by the hole and then rolled back into the cup. Blair gained a set of new tires and a score of one on the par three number nine hole on Saturday. Price's Reggie Farlaino won the closest to the hole contest con-test in the amateur class when he placed plac-ed his ball 3 feet 7V2 inches away from the hole. Mike Malaska, Salt Lake City professional, profes-sional, captured first place in the Superior Tire-Bridgestone Golf Classic with a 6 under par score or 138. He gained gain-ed a birdie and two pars on the out-of-bounds golf ball swallower, the number one hole, but he turned in his best performance per-formance on the par five number two hole as he acquired three birdies and one par. Malaska was so excited that he survived the terrorizing number one hole and easily conquered the par five number two hole. The professional is the one who is suppose sup-pose to make the birdies and keep the team in contention for the pro-am title, but John Price and Deb Casada, Vernal amateurs, put in two long putts for birdies bir-dies on the number nine hole and pro, Chip Garris of Provo said, "These guys don't need a pro". The Chip Garris, Deb Casada, John Price, George Gore team captured first place in the Utah Oil Capital Pro-Am with a score of 194. Deb Casada finished only six shots behind his pro, Chip Garris, at 78 and had a net score of 68. George Gore posted a gross score of 82 and had a net score of 66. John Price fired a gross score of 84 and had a net score of 60. Vernal golfers turned in some outstanding performances in the Superior Tire-Bridgestone Golf Classic, The host pro at the Dinaland Golf Course in Vernal, Jon Mauss, tied for fourth place w ith James Blair of Salt Lake City at 144. Mauss was in third place after the first day with a score of 69, but he fell out of contention for first place with a 75 on Sunday. If James Blair had nabbed a two, three or four like most people do instead of his one on the number nine hole with his hole-in-one, then Jon Mauss would have been in fourth place with no company. Doug Hart, a former Vernal resident, who is now a pro at a golf course in Palm Springs, Calif., tied for sixth place with Bruce Summerhays, Salt Lake City, and Reid Goodliffe of Brigham City at 145. Hart fired rounds of 72 and 73. Two Vernal amateurs, Ed Gudac and Hans Parkinson, played outstanding golf in the championship bracket. Gudac placed seventh with a score of 70-79-149 and Hans Parkinson tied for eighth place at 72-80-152. Gudac fired a 2 under par score of 34 on the first nine on Saturday.
